CHAPTER ELEVEN
ELLIOT AND HARRY were waiting at the door when Quinn brought Amanda home. There was a big wedding cake on the table that Harry had made, and a special present that Elliot had made Harry drive him to town in the sleigh to getâa new Desperado album with a picture of Amanda on the cover.
âWhat a present,â Quinn murmured, smiling at Amanda over the beautiful photograph. âI guess Iâll have to listen to it now, wonât I?â
âI even got Hank Shoemanâs autograph,â Elliot enthused. âFinally I can tell the guys at school! Iâve been going nuts ever since I realized who Amanda was....â
âYou knew?â Quinn burst out. âAnd you didnât tell me? So thatâs why that tape disappeared.â
âYou were looking for it?â Elliot echoed.
âSure, just after we got home from the lodge that night I deserted Amanda,â Quinn said with a rueful glance at her. âI was feeling pretty low. I just wanted to hear her voice, but the tape was missing.â
âSorry, Dad,â Elliot said gently. âIâll never do it again, but I was afraid youâd toss her out if you knew she was a rock singer. Sheâs really terrific, you know, and that song that won a Grammy was one of hers.â
âStop, youâll make me blush,â Amanda groaned.
âI can do that,â Quinn murmured dryly and the look he gave Amanda brought scarlet color into her hot cheeks.
âYou were in the paper, Dad,â Elliot continued excitedly. âAnd on the six oâclock news, too! They told all about your skiing days and the Olympic team. Dad, why didnât you keep going? They said you were one of the best giant slalom skiers this country ever produced, but that you quit with a place on the Olympic team in your pocket.â
âItâs a long story, Elliot,â he replied.
âIt was because of my mother, wasnât it?â the boy asked gravely.
âWell, you were on the way and I didnât feel right about deserting her at such a time.â
âEven though sheâd been so terrible to you?â he probed.
Quinn put his hands on his sonâs shoulders. âIâll tell you for a fact, Elliot, you were mine from the day I knew about your existence. I waited for you like a kid waiting for a Christmas present. I bought stuff and read books about babies and learned all the things Iâd need to know to help your mother raise you. Iâd figured, you see, that she might eventually decide that having you was pretty special. Iâm sorry that she didnât.â
âThatâs okay,â Elliot said with a smile. âYou did.â
âYou bet I did. And do.â
âSince you like kids so much, you and Amanda might have a few of your own,â Elliot decided. âI can help. Me and Harry can wash diapers and make formula...â
Amanda laughed delightedly. âOh, you doll, you!â She hugged Elliot. âWould you really not mind other kids around?â
âHeck, no,â Elliot said with genuine feeling. âAll the other guys have little brothers and sisters. It gets sort of lonely, being the only one.â He looked up at her admiringly.
