Chapter 15 - After Action Report

Nanaimo

The cavalry arrived in the form of Bran, Sergeant Thelonious Toussaint, and Privates Luca Petrelli, Isabella Gonzales, and Maya Torres, with Doug Seward, and six Pacific soldiers.

“It’s all clear,” Fatima called down from the rooftop. “I haven’t seen any movement for twenty minutes.”

As Bran led the Marines and soldiers into the quarantine block, Sholto carried the first of the M72s over to the newly arrived trucks.

“You blew up our suspects?” Doug asked.

“My rifle jammed. It seemed like a good idea at the time.”

“How many zombies?” Doug asked.

“Thirty-two. I thought it was going to be a lot more.”

“That’s still a lot.” The Mountie shook his head in calculated concern. “Where were the suspects?”

“At the corner,” Sholto said. He put the rocket launchers into the back of Doug’s RCMP truck, and picked his way around the corpses and the debris, some human, some zombie, some inanimate lumps of road. Most of one suspect was buried beneath one of the fallen metal sheets. The other had been blown in two, his lower half scattered across the road, the top half flung twenty yards along Tenth Street, where it had collided with a pair of bicycles.

“Those bikes weren’t here when we arrived,” Sholto said.

“Must have been their mode of transport,” Doug said. “I’ll process the scene.”

Sholto left him to it, returned to the lab, and found Fatima trying to manoeuvre a laden trolley along the corridor.

“Both suspects are dead,” Sholto said. “Identifying them might be a challenge.”

“We can always take another roll call,” Fatima said.

“Are you still going to process the evidence?”

“Some of it. We don’t know who hired these assassins.”

“We can make a good guess.”

“But that’s not enough for an arrest. The rest of the investigation will take place in Australia, so I want to give them all the information I can.”

By the time they’d loaded the first trolley’s contents into the truck, the Marines were making their way back to the road.

“Look what we found. Canned corn,” Luca said, holding out a canvas bag in a gloved hand.

“There’s ten pallets in the small operating theatre,” Bran said.

“It’s another crime solved,” Doug said. “Just before this clinic was shut down, there was a theft from Nanaimo’s food stores. Thirty pallets of canned corn were stolen. Never found it. They must have hidden it here. Got to wonder if they engineered this outbreak, too. Must have remained on the island, and come back for it during the lean times.”

“And made multiple trips,” Luca said. “Sounds like there’s some pallets missing.”

“Can you show me where you found the bag?” Fatima asked. “It’s unlikely the entire community came here, or that all died during the raid. If some survived, and if they were responsible for deliberately spreading the infection, I’d like to bring them to trial.”
