Chapter 14

Kenan

He felt relatively comfortable in Gloria’s room until the doctor arrived. Then he felt like the stranger he was, listening in on medical jargon and watching her blood pressure be taken.

“It’s fuzzy, but I can see a bit better,” Gloria said as the doctor examined her further. “What’s going on?”

The doctor with his shiny bald head and small bony hands tucked the small flashlight back into his pocket. “Like the other neurological symptoms you’re experiencing, this will likely come and go, until it doesn’t anymore. You may have spells of blurry vision or even some complete loss of vision. The placement of the tumor and some subsequent swelling are the cause.”

“What can you do for the swelling?” Layla asked, her voice small and desperate.

The doctor only shook his head. “Gloria, do you have someone to help you out during the day?”

“Yes,” Kenan answered, raising his hand timidly. “I’m going to be with her during the day.”

“And I’ll stay here at night,” Layla interjected with a sniffle. “For as long as we need.”

Gloria blinked her eyes and seemed to be seeing clearer. “And how long will that be, doctor?”

“He said months. He just told us that last week.” Layla had an urgency in her voice, trying to compel the doctor to confirm.

Instead he tucked his hands in his pockets and stepped back. “With the frequency of these symptoms, we can assume the tumor is growing at a substantial rate. I’d need to do another MRI, but Gloria has indicated she’s not interested in more tests. I can only make a judgment off her vitals and symptoms. I think it’s more realistic to say weeks, maybe a month.”

“Weeks?” Layla asked, suddenly wounded. She puffed herself up, seeming ready to fight. But Kenan knew there was no argument to be made, no amount of convincing would make a difference.

“Layla, why don’t we sit down,” Kenan offered, gently guiding her by the elbow toward a chair in the corner of the room.

“I’m writing a prescription for pain medicine, though it looks like that bottle of whisky might be just as good. Call me day or night and I’ll be here.”

“Thank you, doctor,” Gloria said, reaching up bleary eyed and taking his hand. “I appreciate your candor and how available you’ve made yourself to me.”

“Gloria, you’ve been my friend for many years. I’d do anything for you.” He gathered the rest of his things and slipped out of the room.

“We’ll have to speed up our list, Kenan. Maybe we move the skydiving to Monday.” Gloria sipped her whiskey with a smile. “I’m seeing much better now so please cheer up. Actually, please go finish your dinner.”

“We’re not hungry anymore.” Layla pulled her chair closer. “I really just want to sit here with you. If you don’t mind the company.”

“I’d love the company.”

Kenan watched them lean into each other and whispered, “I’ll come back in the morning.”

Gloria hummed. “Tomorrow is Saturday. We can’t possibly keep you from your family on the weekends too.”

Layla looked concerned.
