Bella and Claire insisted that they were fine to be left alone to wait for news of Tony and Jack. Claire gave Oliver the keys to Tony’s house and the name of the teachers so he and Lexi could collect the children from the parish school. She promised to give the headmistress a call to let her know they were coming.

Jools, satisfied that there was nothing further that she could do for Bella and her mother, returned to the bookshop to have supper with her grandmother. As they sat down to a shepherd’s pie, she finally told her grandmother what had happened.

‘I did hear something late morning about a lost fishing boat from one of my customers,’ Gran admitted.

‘Why didn’t you say anything?’ Jools had been trying to protect her grandmother when all along she’d known that Jack and Tony were missing. Even though the bad weather had kept most people away from the shop, someone was bound to have mentioned it.

‘Because I knew you were trying not to upset me and I was happy for you to carry on,’ her gran said, serving more carrots and peas at the small kitchen table. ‘I knew you wanted to support your friends and didn’t want you feeling you had to keep popping back to check up on me.’

‘Gran, really. I do wish you’d told me.’

Her gran pushed her fork into the meat and gravy on her plate. ‘It’s done now, so stop worrying about it.’ After swallowing a mouthful of food, she added, ‘No news in the last hour?’

Jools shook her head, trying not to give in to her fear. It had been hours since Marius received the emergency shout and she couldn’t stand not knowing how he was faring. She looked across the table at her gran and saw that she wasn’t the only one struggling to pretend that everything was all right. Jools forced herself to keep eating. Gran had spent a while cooking this delicious meal. The least she could do was appreciate her hard work and try to enjoy it.

Her phone vibrated against her hip. Jools gasped and almost dropped her fork. ‘Sorry, Gran,’ she said, aware how much her grandmother disliked people using their mobiles during a meal. ‘You don’t mind if I get this, do you?’ She leaned back and extracted her still paint-smeared phone from her jeans pocket.

‘Carry on. We’re both desperate to hear news.’

Jools stared at the screen. She didn’t recognise the number. With shaking hands, she answered the call. ‘Hello?’

‘Jools, hi.’

‘Marius, it’s so good to hear from you,’ Jools had never been more relieved to hear someone’s voice. ‘You’re okay?’

‘I am. So are the others.’ He sounded exhausted. ‘I can’t talk for long but wanted you to know that I was fine. Can you let Bella and Claire know that Jack and Tony are safe and well? There were a few issues, but nothing to worry about. Will you speak to them?’

‘Yes, I’ll go straight over.’ Jools swallowed the lump in her throat determined not to cry.
