Chapter Sixteen
âYou damn stupid idiot.â Edward kicked out at a stone, sending it flying, as he heard the archiveâs door slam behind him. Storming out of the building like a tantrum-throwing teenager was a mistake on so many levels. One â now he couldnât hear the remainder of the conversation. Two â his behavior wasnât becoming for a Princeâs consort. Three â heâd left his mate with the gorgeous mint green demon and Mammon hadnât followed him out. How stupid can you get?
And now, Edward wasnât sure where to go or what to do. He had no clue where Mammonâs house was â itâs not as though there was a sign pointing to some mansion claiming, âPrince lives here.â It was tempting to ask someone for the directions Edward had already promised he wouldnât ask for, but until he knew how the demon favor system worked, Edward wasnât going to risk it.
Spotting a bench handy to the building, Edward went and sat down. He could still see the door heâd slammed out of, but because of the black glass, he couldnât make out Mammon, or his green friend in the reception area. I am so damn stupid. I shouldâve kept my mouth shut. But Edward had been stung. To hear a stranger blithely talk as though his family was hit by nothing but bad luck, when Edward had lived under the threat of a damn curse since he came into his powers â there was no way he could stay silent.
Purposefully looking away from the door, Edward looked towards the township. The archive building was set higher than the town with a wide flagstone courtyard separating it from the main road into town. Edward could see people moving around, shopping, visiting, living their normal lives as though the bombshell Edward had been hit with hadnât happened.
What the hell does all this mean? Edwardâs parents hadnât cared when Harry died. To their way of thinking, heâd got everything heâd deserved, incurring the curse and dying because his magic wasnât there to save him. Edward had cared. Harry was nothing like Tobias or John. He was fun loving, free living, and never took himself or their parents seriously. Edward had scoured police reports, the coronerâs report and everything he could find on the investigation in his brotherâs death. Three facts stood out, validating his familyâs talk about the curse.
Harry was skiing alone, so no one else killed him.
He got caught in a freak avalanche and was found, frozen to death the day following his ski, by a search party formed when he hadnât returned to his hotel that previous night.
The coroner, employed by the Ministry, reported that Harry had absolutely no magic residue found in his body and a search at the scene had found no magic there either. Yet, after a discussion with the parents, it was reported Harry was killed by a freak accident and no further investigations were made into what happened to his magic.
