CALLA
Not having to get up at six on Saturday morning is so luxurious. Even though I conked out with my book immediately after dinner last night and probably slept almost eleven hours, it’s delicious not to have to jump out of bed at dawn. Since I don’t have to report anywhere until this afternoon, I also get to do the most amazing, terrific thing and just lie there after my eyes open, no requirements except my own drifty memories of past Saturday mornings, when all the cabins went into town: wandering in shops and rock-hopping with Duncan in the creek that runs beside the main road. I wonder if Vivi and Daze are doing that right now, and how the swing dance went for them last night: if Bot’s hooked up with anyone, or how things are going with Dizzy and the white-haired fox. I feel a little bit of a pang, having missed it all. But I could barely register much of anybody at dinner last night, let alone muster energy to dance. I was so tired after having pulled myself through Hangover Day that not even Duncan was really on my radar at that point. I did make myself give him an A-OK sign when I dragged myself and my tray by his table at dinner and he looked up, all attentive and concerned, but even getting embarrassed seemed like too much work.
I decide I should probably get moving now, though, see what’s going on and re-enter reality a little bit. Maybe do some laundry. I head out into the lounge, listen for Kesiah or Lucy, but the doors of both their rooms are wide open and everything is still. I bet with campers gone into town by now, they’re all down by the lake, taking advantage of the early quiet.
I let myself enjoy the treat of another long, hot, luxurious shower. I even sing as loud as I want, thrilled that nobody can hear me. Midway through “Southland in the Springtime,” though, I find myself wishing a little that Dizzy or Bot would come and sit on the toilet and sing with me like they do sometimes at home. This completely bums me out without warning, because really there’s only going to be a couple of weeks between the end of camp and my heading off to Smith. I wonder if it’ll even occur to them, or to me, to do something as goofy as singing in the bathroom together before I leave.
I’m glad I’ll get to be with them during games this afternoon, at least. I hope, when their teams are at whichever station I get assigned to, that we can hang out a little, cheer each other on. But for now I need to figure out what I’m doing in the meantime. After pulling on some shorts and a tank top, I head outside, where the sun is bright and beautiful and it’s immediately warming and delicious on my skin: totally the most perfect morning for just lying around sunbathing, reading stupid magazines, and chilling out.
