We arrived at Portokali a little late, about three-quarters of the way through Thaliaâs first set. By then, all the seats were taken, leaving standing room around the edges only. It didnât particularly bother me except that standing around felt a little awkward when you didnât know anybody. I would have preferred to take a quiet seat in the corner somewhere and fade into the background.
Jacko had disappeared into the bar to get us a drink.
I hastily scanned the crowd to see if I could spot Becks. The outside of the bar was not very well lit, but to my relief, the coast seemed clear.
Jacko finally reappeared at the door to the bar with our drinks. I could see her try to figure out a way to get back to me. More people had arrived, and she eventually seemed to give up, leaning against the door, presumably until the end of the set.
After another song or two, the young Thalia stopped and said something in Greek, to which the audience erupted in excited applause and whoops. I saw Jacko step aside out of the doorway just in time to avoid being carried back in to the building by the mass rampage towards the bar.
Eventually, Jacko zigzagged her way back to where I had found a little eddy from the crowd.
âBetter late than never. Cheers,â she said, and handed me an ice-cold bottle of beer.
A storm was moving in and the temperatures had dropped. A shiver ran through my body at the feel of the cold bottle on such a chilled night. Perhaps I should have opted for a hot chocolate.
âSo now for the moment of truth,â Jacko said, turning her attention squarely on me. âTell me, who is the lucky lady?â
I frowned and tried to look blank as convincingly as possible.
âCome on,â she said, gently bumping her shoulder against mine. âItâs me. Donât pretend you donât know what I mean.â
I raised my eyebrows. Just then, my eye caught the familiar silhouette of the blonde ponytail and a prickle of tension crawled over my skin. Of course, Jacko noticed my distraction and turned to see what I had seen. Becks also saw us grinned, waved and, to my great trepidation, made her way over.
âHey,â Jacko embraced Becks in a warm hug. They exchanged niceties, Becks welcoming her back from her work trip.
âYou arrived just in time,â Jacko said. Still with her arm around Becksâ shoulders, she coaxed her into the huddle.
âHave you two met? This isââ
âBecks. Yes, we have,â I blurted, and extended my hand in a formal handshake.
Becks hesitated for a split second and a frown flashed across her features. Luckily, she played along. She took my hand and smiled.
I worried Jacko would notice the weirdness. So, I continued quickly. âYes, we met the night you took me to the first Greek evening.â
Becks nodded. âYes, at the Greek evening.â She hesitated again. âItâs nice to see you again, Terry.â She winked.
I squirmed.
âWell, you arrived just in time.â Jacko continued. âSpice here was just going to tell us about the mystery lady she met while I was away.
