He had to get out. That was the only thought in Driver’s head. Everything he’d done in the past several months, he’d done for Cortland. He appreciated Micah and Wyld. They’d given him a new life. Without Cortland having given him a reason to fight, he never would’ve accepted Micah’s job offer. Having four walls and ceiling surrounding him only created another house to trap his horrible thoughts. He had to get out before he did any more damage. All Driver did was destroy everything, especially the people he loved.
His crazed thoughts carried him across the street the moment he made it home. When Jonah answered, Driver jumped in with both feet like the crazy person he was. He couldn’t give himself time to think. Driver was weak when it came to Cortland. “Do you think John would still want to buy Cortland’s sketches?”
Jonah blinked at Driver as if overwhelmed by his burst of words with no hello. “I’m sure he would. How many do you have?”
“Ten.” Minus the one of Cortland in Driver’s bedroom. He could never part with that one.
Jonah waved him inside. “Come in and I’ll text him. He’s always pretty quick to text me back. You look impatient to be rid of them.”
Guilt weighed more than Driver expected. “I need the money.”
A bright smile lit Jonah’s face. His gaze lifted from his phone to meet Driver’s. “Are you finally going after Cortland?”
“No. I’m finally getting out of his way.”
Jonah’s smile fell. He sat. “Oh, sweetie. What happened?”
Pain washed over Driver, swelling his throat. He tried to speak. No words came. He knew he’d break if he explained. Someone who’d stolen so much life didn’t get to move on and be happy. For the rest of his life, Driver would pay for his actions. Whereas most killers spent their lives behind bars, paying for their crime, Driver had to spend the rest of his life inside the prison in his head. He’d known he didn’t deserve happiness when he met Cortland. Driver had never meant to drag Cortland into his hell. Cortland didn’t deserve to have anything else happen to him. He deserved peace. Driver would give it to him. None of those confessions would make their way to Driver’s lips.
“He never left so I have to.”
Jonah visibly floundered. His mouth opened as if to speak before snapping closed again. He blinked and tried again. “What do you mean he never left? Like, he never left town?”
Driver nodded. That was all the strength he had.
Anger flashed in Jonah’s eyes. “Has he just been hiding from you this whole goddamn time while you were sitting around, worrying and waiting?”
Hurt wouldn’t release its hold on Driver’s tongue. He nodded again.
“Well, fuck that.” Jonah dropped his gaze to his phone and furiously typed. The phone dinged, and Jonah kept typing. He’d never seen anyone fire off texts so fast. A satisfied looking smile stretched Jonah’s lips. He met Driver’s stare, looking proud of himself. “John says he’ll give you two
