Five

His leg was on fire and he was dying. Hendrix couldn’t go home to Jude like this. His eye was probably turning black from the punch he hadn’t been able to avoid when his knee had given out earlier. There was no way he could explain that to Jude. One of his bad spells was coming. He’d been here too many times not to recognize the signs. His calf muscle was completely locked. He couldn’t do anything but drag his leg along like dead weight.

Time passed as he stared inside his open freezer. He blinked, trying to remember why he was there. Oh, yeah. Ice. Pain owned his brain. He couldn’t think. His phone buzzed. Hendrix glanced over at the device on the counter. Jude’s name stared up at him. Hendrix’s chest hurt. He wanted to answer and beg Jude to come make this better, but he was stupid. He’d done this to himself. From the first day he’d trained with the staff Wyld assigned him, Hendrix had known it wouldn’t work. The pain had been too massive. Still, he’d powered through another three weeks of torture, hoping against hope he could be something other than the person who warmed Jude’s bed. Hendrix was beyond proud of being with Jude. That was enough for him and would be for the rest of his life. But, would it be enough for Jude? Hendrix wanted the man to look at him with the same pride. Not gesture over his shoulder at him like John had Michelle and Jonah, introducing him with laughter in his voice.

Fuck. He knew it was mostly the pain screwing with his mood. Hendrix couldn’t be this person in front of Jude—bitter. The freezer’s motor fired to life, casting another waft of cold air in Hendrix’s face. Ice. That’s why he was standing there. While holding the edge of the freezer in one hand, Hendrix dug through the kitchen drawer for a hand towel with the other. He twisted. Fire burst to life in his leg. A scream tore from his lips. Darkness crowded his vision. The room spun, and Hendrix spent a moment wondering why the floor was getting closer before he thought nothing at all.
