If I thought the world was blurry and difficult to exist in before, the gunfire turns it into a flip book.
Kaleidoscopic flashes pulse across my line of sight.
Javy goes from in front of me to gone within a second? A minute?
The warbling lack of equilibrium makes time disappear.
I drop to my knees off the chair and try to scramble for my actual body.
If my real body dies, then I go with it. I'm guessing.
It hasn't happened yet, and I'm not trying to tempt fate.
Bang.
I clamber in the messy blur and try to make my way across the floor. Sand blasts my face from the outdoors. The scream of the wind drowns everything out.
Thud.
Flesh against flesh, then a crash into the wall. Plaster crumbles beneath the weight of two bodies.
I spin toward the noise, but my senses are fried from the sensory overload.
They're just shadows fighting against one another.
"Shoot him, Tess." Somewhere in the maelstrom, I hear Javy's words. Or maybe they're just a hallucination.
Oof. I hear the connection of a solid gut punch. It sounds like Javy's losing.
I crawl along the floor, worn carpet scraping my elbows.
I see the shadowy outline on the floor.
Tess? Are you Soulwalking? It's Finn's voice, deep in my head.
"Finn!" I shout, throwing myself off balance again.
I can barely sense you. This body seems in bad shape.
"Yeah, no shit. Can you help me?"
Just listen to me. Focus on my voice.
Having that center point calms me down.
For about two seconds. Footsteps clomp nearby, dangerously close, then I feel legs tangled in mine.
Javy careens over me and moans.
That's when I sense the other person.
Or thing. It's not human. It's breath stinks with the aroma of rotten meat. Just like the pile of foxes.
Warm, thick saliva drips down on my bare neck.
Tess? I'm losing you.
Finn's navigation snaps me back. My vision parts, like an ocean revealing the bottom, and I see my body.
I lunge forward just as the beast clamps down on the leg of my temporary host and rips it off with a single pull.
The world explodes in pain.
I fumble for my own wrist. "Help me back!" I scream into the dark room, like Finn is somewhere there with me, can accelerate the transfer of consciousness somehow.
There's a pause, like a hitch on a turntable.
Then I'm back in my own body.
The world is full color, and I see the beast for just a moment.
It snarls, sending its foul saliva spraying everywhere.
Fangs like daggers rush toward my throat.
A memory shakes loose, from the woman.
Recognition of the eyes.
This thing was once a man.
But it transformed into...whatever this is.
I pull the Glock and unload the entire magazine into its face.
And it crashes down on top of me in a warm, slimy heap.
It groans, mouth still moving.
I quickly drop the mag out and reload, press the gun barrel to its face.
And I swear, right before I pull the trigger, it looks relieved.
