Chapter Ten

Mitch

The night seems to last forever as I toss and turn in the bed. When I wake up from one of the small periods of sleep I could get, I look over and notice Kacy’s empty twin bed next to me.

Figuring she’s probably stepped to the bathroom, I toss and turn a while longer before finally deciding to get up and head downstairs. My watch says it’s three in the morning. When Kacy gets back, I don’t want to keep her up with my restlessness.

Carefully making my way down the dark hallway, I move past the landing and to the stairwell. The glow of a fire behind its drawn, chain screen is the only source of light other than the glinting sparkles reflecting from the Christmas tree ornaments. Kacy’s hair is framed in a golden hue where she is sitting on the couch, snuggled in a blanket, apparently watching the flames lick and dance at the new logs on the grate.

“Hey,” I say softly, coming off the bottom step. The floor is chilly, even though my socks are thick and warm.

“Hi,” she responds. “Can’t sleep?”

“No.” I sit down next to her and she offers some of the large blanket she’s covered by. Curling up on the couch, we both are resting our elbows on opposite sides, watching the steady blaze of the crackling fire.

The fire is hypnotic and we both seem to fall into a trance as we watch the flames burn from the embers and lick at the wood. When I turn my head to see if Kacy has fallen asleep, a small tear is rolling down her cheek. She goes to wipe it away as her eyes cut in my direction.

“Don’t.”

“What?” She looks toward me, an inquisitive expression in her gaze.

“You don’t have to wipe your tears and pretend around me.”

She nods her head slightly, returning her stare back to the fire. “Thanks.” Her voice is barely audible in the stillness of the morning.

“I know you and I haven’t talked much,” I say. “How are you doing?”

She sits in silence for a few minutes before speaking. “I miss him.”

“Yeah,” I say. “I know that feeling.”

“I love that the guys put this weekend together,” she begins. “I’m so grateful to have them in my life. But…”

“They don’t get it,” I finish for her while turning in her direction.

“They try.”

“I know. And it makes me love them even more. It’s why I make sure to put on a brave face and at least try to act like everything is okay.” I pull the blanket tighter around me as a log burns through and breaks in the fireplace.

“It’s getting easier to pretend.” After a few minutes of silence, she speaks again. “How do you get through the days?” Kacy asks, staring off into the dark spaces of the room.

“The days are not as hard. I’ve started working a lot. With Ricky leaving, I’ve been handling more of the shifts he used to have. That helps make sure my hands stay busy.
