God almighty! Carlie Beth’s face was the color of mold, so Grif put the car in reverse, backed out of the parking space, and hit the gas. When they made it to the building that housed his office and an upstairs apartment he’d once lived in, his wife lurched out of the car and through the front door. She didn’t lift a hand to wave at his small staff, just stumbled her way to the first-floor bathroom and slammed the door behind her.

Knowing she probably wouldn’t want anyone to hear whatever was going on behind that closed door, he said loudly, “So how are the contracts coming for Mountain SpringFest?”

“Really?” his newly hired assistant James asked. “Do you trust us so little that you couldn’t leave town without checking up on us one more time?”

It was true that Grif wasn’t the best delegator in the world. That came from years of conducting one-on-one negotiations for multimillion-dollar contracts. With that much money on the line, it had always been “In Grif We Trust,” but things were different now.

He waved his staff into a huddle and lowered his voice. “I didn’t have any plans to stop by here, but Carlie Beth’s not feeling too great.”

“Oh.” His assistant’s eyebrows went up. He knew how much Grif had been looking forward to this weekend. They weren’t exactly BFFs, but men knew why other men took women away on romantic weekends. “Oh no. Do you think she caught the bug that’s been going around?”

Lord, he hoped not. Because if that was the case, they would be spending the weekend at home with Grif fetching Carlie Beth a trashcan and a six-pack of ginger ale. “Don’t even say those words,” he gritted out.

“Sorry. Jesus. Sorry.” Grif’s assistant hurried over to a kitchenette they’d built into a corner of the main room. From the fridge, he pulled out a can of ginger ale. “Maybe offer her this?”

Smart man. Exactly why Grif had hired him after he graduated from Duke. He wouldn’t keep him long. The guy had a bright future ahead of him, but Grif would teach him and get good work from him while he could. He took the ice-cold soda and approached the bathroom door. “Shortcake, I’ve got a cold drink out here for you. Can you let me in?”

The toilet flushed and the water ran for several seconds before the door opened a crack, showing one brown eye and a sliver of her pale face.

“Do you think you can make it upstairs?” he asked. Sometimes the apartment had a tenant, like when Emmy McKay was living there, but it was empty at the moment. “Maybe lie down for a few minutes until this thing passes?” Please, please let it pass.

“That’s probably a good idea,” she croaked out.

He wrapped his arm around her and led her slowly up the stairs. And it said something about her state when she immediately flopped down on the ass-ugly green, pink, and yellow couch Hattie Martin had once owned.
