Chapter Ten

Rollo was as large and kind as Kieran claimed, and after an hour, Rollo had gathered enough wolves to start on the various repairs needed throughout the house. It would take some time, but with Surrena’s permission, he and the other wolves knocked out a handful of windows in the lower level of the manor, then worked on replacing the worn brackets inside the basement.

As they did, Surrena stood nearby, offering to lend a hand whenever she could.

“That won’t be necessary,” Rollo said as he wiped his forehead on the back of his arm. “We’re just happy we won’t have to move. Consider this our way of thanking you.”

“But I haven’t done anything,” Surrena said, picking up a hammer once it was available. “I’m not like my father.”

“No, you’re not,” another wolf said. “You’ve given us the freedom to grow and to tend to something we love. Rollo’s right. This is the least we can do since you’ve stepped in.”

“My father won’t see it that way.”

“Maybe not, but it had to be done. I’m glad it happened while we’re all still here.”

“Me too,” Surrena said with a content sigh. “Me too.”

“I can help,” I said as the others returned to their work. “I’m small and am used to fitting in tight spaces, so if there’s something you can’t reach, let me know.”

Rollo laughed, then handed me a drill. “Off you go, then. We need someone to help with the water heater.”

“The water heater?” Kieran hadn’t mentioned it before.

“It’s an old house with low maintenance.” Rollo shrugged, then went back to helping another wolf with a beam nearby. “What can I say?”

I offered the larger wolf a kind smile, then studied Surrena who looked like she was worlds away. “You all right?”

“Hmm?” Surrena snapped to, then shook her head. “I’m good. Just confused as to why my father let it get this bad.”

“He never asked,” Kieran said as he joined us in the basement, “and he never listened.”

“But it’s our home.”

“When the she-alpha left, a part of him went with her,” Rollo said with regret. “He used to help around the place when you were young but hasn’t checked the place in some time.”

“It’s like he’s a shell,” Kieran said. “I haven’t known him as long as some of the others, but after hearing all their stories, it’s like he’s a different wolf.”

“I’ve seen that as well,” Surrena murmured. “I just don’t know how to fix it.”

“Maybe it isn’t something you can fix.” I looked at her from across the room. “These support beams, the windows, the water heater… we can do something about them. However, if your father’s struggling, the only thing you can do is offer to help.”

“But is this really helping?” She gestured at the wolves that had gathered in the basement and averted her gaze. “Making repairs behind his back?”

“They have to be done,” Rollo told her, “otherwise, the home as we know it will change. And not for the best.”

Surrena nodded but clearly wasn’t convinced. I understood her hesitation.
