10-29-14 Burbank CA: 2019 hrs. Fanatic! I’m in night three of tripping on Document. I’m listening to it again right now.
Just got an email from Ian about the Damned show in DC last Sunday. He hung out with Dave and Captain after the show. I’m all kinds of jealous. Ian said they were great.
I keep trying to put Document in context with Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154. I’ve concluded that listening to Document comparatively is not the way to go. I think one of the most relevant things to keep in mind is this is Wire pushing not only their own boundaries and that of the audience, but also, this is the band outside of the careful steerage of Mike Thorne. It’s the band playing flat out. Mike Thorne was the perfect producer for Wire but the records are so produced that, as someone who has never seen the band play live, I had no idea what they were really like.
I usually avoid live recordings of bands from this era as they’re often abysmal soundwise and the performances aren’t always great, although being at the show probably would have been a good time. Document rumbles like a Post Punk Metallic ‘K.O.
The more I listen to Document, the more I think the band knew this was it and wanted to go out with some kind of bang. It seems to me that if you’re going to try and appeal to a bunch of record execs, even the small label variety, you would want to have been more prepared. Also, if you were going to record the show for release, would you want to still be figuring the songs out in front of the audience? Maybe Document was what Wire was meaning to say all along. What makes the album so great is while it’s not perfect, it’s so real and the strength of the band is so up front. Even when Pink Flag was released, Wire was already past Punk Rock. By the time they played the Electric Ballroom, they were past themselves. The audience members who were so angry sound like they were pulled out of a Sham 69 show.
