SCENE 96. INT. CARIDA MILITARY ACADEMY. SHIP HANGAR—DAY.

Atmos: A busy hangar, the cadets learning how to maintain ships. Tools clanging. Droids chirping. We can hear someone using a servodriver, a form of wrench, in the foreground.

FX: Clipped footsteps as Captain Reese walks among his cadets.

CAPTAIN REESE:

That’s it, cadets. You’re doing well. Remember, a good officer knows every millimeter of their vessels. Every nut and every bolt. That is why exercises like this are so important. You must be able to repair and maintain your ships.

WILSON:

(WHISPERED) I thought that’s what mechanics are for?

LALUTIN:

(WHISPERED) Tell me about it. We shouldn’t be doing this crud. Not like that Twi’lek. There’s a gearhead if I ever saw one.

They both snigger, stifling their merriment as Reese suddenly stops near them.

CAPTAIN REESE:

Cadet Lalutin. Is there something you wish to share with the rest of the squad?

LALUTIN:

No, sir.

CAPTAIN REESE:

I’m glad to hear it. What about you, Wilson?

WILSON:

Nothing, sir. We were just …

CAPTAIN REESE:

You were just what?

LALUTIN:

Discussing the starfighter’s … um …

WILSON:

(QUICKLY) Field stabilizers.

LALUTIN:

Yeah. That’s it. The field stabilizers.

CAPTAIN REESE:

Well, maybe if you concentrated on the matter at hand …

LALUTIN:

Yes, sir.

WILSON:

Of course, sir.

FX: Reese continues walking. We stay with him.

CAPTAIN REESE:

Listen to your training droid. I want these ships ready to fly within the hour. Within the hour.

LOURNA (TEENAGE):

(TO HERSELF) Why? It’s not like we’re going anywhere.

TRAINING DROID:

Cadet Inun. Warning. Bolts are still loose.

LOURNA:

Yes, I know. Keep it down, will you?

FX: A squeak as she tightens the bolt, which continues beneath the following.

LOURNA: (CONT)

(WITH EFFORT AS SHE TIGHTENS THE BOLT) The last thing I need is anyone else on my back.

TRAINING DROID:

My only purpose is to facilitate learning.

LOURNA:

Yeah, yeah.

FX: We hear the clank of tools being rifled through across the bay.

LALUTIN: (OFF MIC)

Hey, Wilson. You got a servodriver?

LOURNA:

(SOTTO) Why don’t you look in your mouth? It’s big enough.

WILSON: (OFF MIC)

Not me. What about Inun?

LOURNA:

(SOTTO) Please don’t come over. Please don’t come over.

FX: Lalutin approaches.

LALUTIN: (COMING UP ON MIC)

Cadet Inun.

LOURNA:

(SOTTO, TRYING TO IGNORE HIM) He came over.

LALUTIN:

What’s that?

LOURNA:

(STILL WITH EFFORT AS SHE CONTINUES TO TIGHTEN THE BOLT) Nothing. What do you want, Lalutin?

LALUTIN:

Your servodriver.

LOURNA:

I’m using my servodriver.

LALUTIN:

Yeah, and now I need it.

LOURNA:

Tough.

LALUTIN:

Cadet. Give me the driver.

FX: Lourna jumps up, her anger getting the best of her.

LOURNA:

How much?

LALUTIN:

What?

LOURNA:

How much do you want it?

LALUTIN:

Are you threatening me?

LOURNA:

What if I am?

WILSON:

(WALKING UP) Then you’re in serious trouble.

LOURNA:

Stay out of this, Wilson.

WILSON:

I’m afraid I can’t do that. You’re a first-year cadet. When a first-year like you is asked for something by a senior like Lalutin, your response is, “Yes, sir. Here you are, sir. Is there anything else I can do for you, sir?”

LOURNA:

You can’t pull rank. Neither of you. You’re no better than me.

LALUTIN:

And that’s where you’re wrong.

LOURNA:

Really? Looked at the assessment scores lately? Because I have.

LALUTIN:

Hand it over.

WILSON:

Or we report you to Captain Reese.

LALUTIN:

For insubordination.

LOURNA:

(LAUGHS) Can you hear yourselves? Playing soldiers.

WILSON:

No one’s playing, cadet. Carida is—

LOURNA:

Carida is a sham. And so are you. You flounce around, pretending that you’re going to change the galaxy, when the truth is that you’re going
