LATER THAT MORNING, Sister St. Agnes crossed the enclosure and stood looking down at the man and the dog he held. The boy was sitting close to Swanson, holding on to one of the dog’s paws. Neither the boy nor the man looked up at her. They continued to stare out into the sunlight of the canyon. She studied the dog carefully and knew it was dead. She knelt down in front of Swanson and reached to take it out of his arms. He shook his head and gathered the dog closer to him. The boy held on as well.

“He’s dead, Mr. Swanson. Why don’t you let me take him and get him ready to bury? He needs to be cleaned up and wrapped in cloth.”

Swanson shook his head again and continued to hold the dog.
