CHARLIE

We arrived in San Diego that night. We stayed at the ocean until it was evening, and then it was another almost three hours to San Diego. It was supposed to be two, but the traffic got pretty ugly trying to leave Santa Monica. I was a little sad to leave the ocean, but I knew it was going to be the same in San Diego. Or something like the same.

There was something about that clean blue ocean near the pier. It didn’t matter that we didn’t even go on the rides or anything like that; it seemed like we were all too tired. While the worst of the hangovers had dissipated, it seemed to have a lingering effect. Shane mentioned it at one point, questioning why we even bothered to stop in Santa Monica when we were already going to a beach later on. No one had an answer for him, just that we wanted to see it, maybe.

Shane pulled into the hotel parking lot, which he’d been kind enough to organize after we pitched in some money. We piled out of the car with our things.

“Okay, so we have three rooms,” Shane said after he came back from the lobby. “I really didn’t want to have to worry about you guys and your smells, so I’m solo. I assume Charlie and Theo want to share, and that leaves Tweedledee and Tweedledum to be in the last one. Any complaints?”

Honestly, I hadn’t expected him to get more than one room.

“Yeah, that’s cool.” Dylan shrugged. “Brad and I always make a good team.”

Theo looked vaguely uncomfortable. His lips pressed together, lost in thought about this new arrangement.

“Okay, then that’s that. We going out tonight?” Shane asked, glancing at us each in turn.

Again? Not to feel like the complete homebody I was, but shit, did we need to go out every single night?

At least for now, the others seemed to agree. “I think we should just rest tonight,” Theo offered, raising his hands over his head and stretching in that way of his.

A strip of skin became visible as he lifted, and my eyes immediately jumped to it, taking in the golden hue. It was almost a reflex at this point, wanting to see as much of him as I could. It was mesmerizing, the way he made me want to touch him. Something about being so close to him…about the way he looked at me, the way he kissed me in the ocean.

But the moment was broken as we shuffled away to our rooms. No one argued about it. Maybe even they needed a little of a break. Somehow, I doubted there would be much more of one after tonight. They seemed excited about the possibility of this spring break trip, about all the drinking and stupid things. Shane said something about the stories they’d tell their kids. It all seemed a little too serious, like maybe he was thinking too far ahead of himself.

Who was I, a chronic overthinker, to delve too deeply into his thoughts, though?

I followed Theo silently.
