Chapter 17: Matt

The sun was up. I could tell because it was shining through the bars of my window, which was too high up for me to reach. I hadn’t seen a human face since Garland’s visit last night.

Oh, and I was still a wolf.

There was a reason for that, according to Garland. The lamb had been laced with a potion that the coven had perfected over the years.

“It forces shifters into their animal forms. They developed it using your blood, drawn from you when you were an infant,” he’d explained. “But don’t worry. Once you digest it all, it’ll fade.”

And then he’d told me the coven would be happy to get me back, so they could use me to develop another experimental potion.

Well, at least now I knew that Garland and Arlena were still in league with the mysterious coven, and that meant that they were no friend to us shifters. I also accepted that they weren’t my family, because what kind of family gave their offspring up to witches to be experimented on—twice?

Only a few days had passed since I left my mom in Eugene, but I ached for her so fiercely already. I found myself wishing I’d never come to Riverrun, seeking family when I already had family of my own.

But then, I never would’ve met Jesse.

I will see her again, I told myself. And then, I will see Jesse again…

I started howling. I didn’t care if it bothered the staff in the main house. I needed to unleash my voice, just in case somebody out there could hear me.

When I spent all of my breath, I drew in another lungful of air. Just as I was on the verge of howling again, I heard soft footsteps padding down the aisle outside my stall door. A second later, I smelled wolves.

But they weren’t Grayback wolves.

The footsteps hesitated.

Hope inflated inside of my chest. I yelped as loud as I could. In here!

The footsteps advanced and stopped just outside my door. At once, I heard the wet, cracking sound of a shifter changing bodies, and Jesse’s handsome face finally revealed itself.

I howled, but in elation this time. No human words could express the joy I felt when I saw him. I thought it was the happiest I ever felt, up until the moment when Jesse’s face cracked in half with a wide grin.

Then, I was absolutely ecstatic.

Another man appeared behind him. Jesse looked over his shoulder at him, gesturing towards me. “Seth, he’s in here,” he said.

Seth?

Seth was the name of Jesse’s ex. Now, they were here together. What did that mean?

The shock of his sudden appearance coupled with my confusion over the two of them together was what finally put me over the edge. My body went cold and clammy as a stone formed in my stomach. I jerked my head down just in time to puke up the half-digested remnants of last night’s dinner.

After slapping the last of the bile off my lips with my tongue, I finally began to shift back.
