After fumigating the bedroom and putting Ace down for his first nap of the day, I went downstairs and looked for her. I wasn’t sure what I’d say to the chick who’d captured Spectre’s attention. I also didn’t know why I felt compelled to speak to her or why I couldn’t stop thinking about her after hearing them have sex in the middle of the night.

I wanted Spectre to be happy and find someone to share his life with. I didn’t hate him, even though I probably should. He’d been my best friend before he got into cahoots with Bone. I wanted him to fall in love for real and let the past go.

So I guessed I was on a mission to find Jinx to be sure she was good enough for Spectre. I’d checked his room before I’d come down, and she wasn’t there. I searched for the petite woman who seemed too soft for the Knight family, much less for Spectre.

I wandered through the main floor, going from one room to another.

She wasn’t in the kitchen or den.

Not in the living room or guest bathroom.

Where had she gone? I slipped the baby monitor into my back pocket and went outside. Leaning against the porch railing, I scanned the property. Lady M and Ben had taken Nova out shopping. They’d grab lunch before returning home. If I wanted to talk to Jinx alone, I needed to do it asap.

Hope was in her room with Cherish. Piper and Pyro were out touring homes. I couldn’t blame them for wanting their own place. Pyro’s bandmates wanted the RV he’d borrowed back. I couldn’t wait to move back to the home Abe had built for me. My man had kept putting me off. I understood his worries for my safety and the kids, but I desperately wanted privacy. We’d been married almost nine months ago. We were still newlyweds, for Christ’s sake. I wanted loud, wild sex, not quiet, vanilla lovemaking with my husband.

I went down the stairs and around the house toward the barn. I stopped in my tracks when I saw her sitting by the chicken run the same way I’d seen Spectre.

Inhaling a deep breath, I continued forward.

She peered over her shoulder as if sensing me. “Hi.” She waved. “I hope it’s okay I’m out here.”

Strange thing to say. “Yup, it’s totally fine. Can I join you?”

“Sure.” She patted a spot next to her. “I’ve never been on a farm before. Chickens don’t do much, but I can’t seem to stop watching them scratch and cluck.” She laughed nervously.

“Spectre likes to sit out here too.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yup. I think this is his thinking spot.” I could see her smile softly in my peripheral. Polite conversation wasn’t my way, so I jumped right to it before losing my nerve. “He’s never brought a girl to the farm. You must be special.”

“He didn’t actually have a choice.” She kept her gaze on the chickens. “I’d come without him knowing. Thought I might surprise him, but then he was in Vegas.
