After fumigating the bedroom and putting Ace down for his first nap of the day, I went downstairs and looked for her. I wasnât sure what Iâd say to the chick whoâd captured Spectreâs attention. I also didnât know why I felt compelled to speak to her or why I couldnât stop thinking about her after hearing them have sex in the middle of the night.
I wanted Spectre to be happy and find someone to share his life with. I didnât hate him, even though I probably should. Heâd been my best friend before he got into cahoots with Bone. I wanted him to fall in love for real and let the past go.
So I guessed I was on a mission to find Jinx to be sure she was good enough for Spectre. Iâd checked his room before Iâd come down, and she wasnât there. I searched for the petite woman who seemed too soft for the Knight family, much less for Spectre.
I wandered through the main floor, going from one room to another.
She wasnât in the kitchen or den.
Not in the living room or guest bathroom.
Where had she gone? I slipped the baby monitor into my back pocket and went outside. Leaning against the porch railing, I scanned the property. Lady M and Ben had taken Nova out shopping. Theyâd grab lunch before returning home. If I wanted to talk to Jinx alone, I needed to do it asap.
Hope was in her room with Cherish. Piper and Pyro were out touring homes. I couldnât blame them for wanting their own place. Pyroâs bandmates wanted the RV heâd borrowed back. I couldnât wait to move back to the home Abe had built for me. My man had kept putting me off. I understood his worries for my safety and the kids, but I desperately wanted privacy. Weâd been married almost nine months ago. We were still newlyweds, for Christâs sake. I wanted loud, wild sex, not quiet, vanilla lovemaking with my husband.
I went down the stairs and around the house toward the barn. I stopped in my tracks when I saw her sitting by the chicken run the same way Iâd seen Spectre.
Inhaling a deep breath, I continued forward.
She peered over her shoulder as if sensing me. âHi.â She waved. âI hope itâs okay Iâm out here.â
Strange thing to say. âYup, itâs totally fine. Can I join you?â
âSure.â She patted a spot next to her. âIâve never been on a farm before. Chickens donât do much, but I canât seem to stop watching them scratch and cluck.â She laughed nervously.
âSpectre likes to sit out here too.â
âOh, really?â
âYup. I think this is his thinking spot.â I could see her smile softly in my peripheral. Polite conversation wasnât my way, so I jumped right to it before losing my nerve. âHeâs never brought a girl to the farm. You must be special.â
âHe didnât actually have a choice.â She kept her gaze on the chickens. âIâd come without him knowing. Thought I might surprise him, but then he was in Vegas.
