Chapter 8

Jeff relaxed into the kiss at first. But, after a few seconds, he pulled back to stop it. He pushed Helen away as she tried to move toward him again.

“What’s wrong? You used to kiss me before.”

“That was just two kids fooling around then. We’re not kids anymore and we’re still cousins.”

Helen laughed softy as she tried again to move closer. “We’re second cousins, not first. There’s nothing wrong with this. Your grandparents were second cousins. So were Mama Hazel and Great-Gramps.”

Jeff kept his arms tensed to keep Helen away. “I’m sorry Helen. It just doesn’t feel right to me. I like you okay and all that. You were my best friend both down here and when you would come to Rocksville, but I’ve never thought of you any way but family.”

Helen relaxed. She slid away slightly while smiling at his questioning face. “Jeff, I’ve loved you for a long time. Since we were kids. I was scared I’d lost you when you when to war. I promised myself that I’d tell you how I felt if I ever got to see you again. Anyway, I’m sorry if that scares you, but it needed to be said.”

Jeff relaxed backward and placed his hands in the sand behind him. “Visiting with you was one of the things I really missed after my grandparents died. I always felt that I not only lost them, but I lost you too. But, what could I do about it. I was just a kid being led around by adults. I couldn’t just come down here by myself.”

“I felt the same way. I even tried to get my parents to let me visit you up in Richmond, but daddy said no.”

“But why me? Sure, we were good friends, but I went on to have other friends. I even had a girlfriend throughout high school.”

“Did you love her?”

Jeff turned his eyes toward the breaking waves. “Yea. I guess I did. At times I think I still do.”

“What happened to the two of you?”

He turned his eyes back toward Helen. “We headed to different colleges. Her parents wanted her to go to Vassar. All I could afford was in-state tuition at a school in Virginia. I lost touch with her after I dropped out and enlisted. She’s probably married by now. How about you? You must have dated guys around here.”

She bent her head downward looking at the sand laying between them. “Sure, I dated. I even thought a few of them loved me. In the end, those guys only wanted one of two things, my discount at my parent's sporting goods store or to get into my pants a few times. Either way, after they got what they wanted, they found a reason to break up.”

Jeff placed his hand on the back of Helen’s neck. “I’m sorry.”

She looked directly into his eyes. The glint of a tear lined her lower lid. “You were the only guy I’ve ever known that was always honest with me. Even now, you’re not telling me what I want to hear, but you’re saying what’s true in your heart.
