A week later, the homeless were brought before Judge Sinclair, who had agreed to try them all en masse. Despite claims by several homeless people that a pickup had driven by at about four a.m. and firebombed the mission, the judge went with the fire department’s conclusion that the fire had been set inside the building.

“This is a devastating tragedy that involves a horrible loss of life,” Judge Sinclair said. “Sister Martha Jacobsen was a pillar of our community. She has given everything she has for you people and has been repaid in this way. If it were up to me, you would all be thrown in prison. But I can’t convict all of you for a crime that only one of you committed.

“However, it is within my power to evict you from this city. All of you. I want you all out of here, as far from here as humanly possible. And if I find any of you in this city again, I will find a way to send you to prison for a very long time.”

She banged her gavel.

Connie and Harold Innsmuir were watching when this happened.
