Chapter 17

If things could possibly get any worse than they already were, this would be the one thing on the top of Cathy’s Cannot Possibly Happen list. Especially now with everything going on, the spirits in her house threatening to reveal her darkest secrets, putting her marriage and her whole life in jeopardy. There was absolutely no way she was prepared for this, if ever. She had discussed the situation plenty of times with John, and they had both agreed to wait, which was absolutely fine with her. After the last time, she thought she might be happy waiting until she was dead.

There was a good chance it was just nerves. Hell, perfectly feasible it was her nerves, especially after being turned down by Susanne earlier that day, just when she thought the woman was going to agree to come to her house, speak directly with the intruders in her home and solve everything. Yet no matter how much she pleaded, Susanne stubbornly refused. So it was down to her, and she still had no idea how to go about resolving the issue.

She had debated with herself all afternoon about running to the nearest pharmacy and buying a cheap pregnancy test, but with the luck she had been having lately, what if she bumped into someone there? The next-door neighbour who just happened to walk in as she was paying for it and might, just might, decide to congratulate John the next time they saw him? Things like this happened all the time; it would be just her luck. The pharmacy was less than five minutes from her house.

And wouldn’t it be better to just pretend it wasn’t happening and then it might magically go away? She considered this same possibility when pregnant last time, that she would wake up one morning and the foetus inside her would be gone—no more worrying, no more pretending it was something else that caused her moods to suddenly change, that all the throwing up was due to having eaten something rotten. No more lying to John.

But no, there was no way she could handle a suspect pregnancy on top of everything else occurring around her. Tomorrow, first thing, she would go to the pharmacy and grab a test, to hell with the neighbours. She would
