I leapt off Bloodlust and rushed over to the General, who was clutching his chest, blood pouring from his wounds. I could see he was past all help, but fell to my knees in front of him, desperately trying to stop the flow of blood. "What can I do, sir?" I hissed. "Tell me what I can do!"

"Nothing," he murmured, smiling grimly. "There is nothing any man can do for me anymore. It is the day I return to God. I knew it would come one day. Today is as good as any."

"Sir, you can't leave me!" I gasped. "Please! I cannot lose another father!"

"You don't need a father anymore, Dracula," he murmured. "You have become a man. A great man. You don't need anyone anymore."

He coughed, blood spilling from his mouth. I felt tears overwhelming my eyes. "Sir, there must be something I can do…" I began.

"Find one of our men," he whispered. "Quickly."

I obeyed him, looking about desperately for one of our soldiers near us. I saw Mikhail a little ways off and hailed him. He galloped over, took the situation in, and dismounted, rushing over to the General.

"Mikhail, I am glad it is you," murmured the General. "I know you are trustworthy, and I need a witness to what I am about to say."

He lay a hand on my shoulder. "It is my dying wish that Dracula be my successor. That he succeeds me as commander of the forces of Transylvania, that he becomes his highness's general to continue our great war in my stead. He has earned this honor. You must tell his highness. You must tell the men. They must look to Dracula now."

"Sir, I cannot accept such an honor…" I began.

"Don't argue with a dying man," laughed the General. "He doesn't have the time." His laugh turned into a cough, and more blood spewed from his mouth. I began to cry in earnest, seizing his hand. He clasped mine back, tightly.

"I will give your regards to your father," he murmured. "I go to join him in heaven, and your mother, and your brother. You will be with us one day, Dracula. We will watch you and bless you every day until you join us." He smiled again, raising a hand to my cheek. "I am so proud of you," he whispered. "My son. My glorious son."

And he was gone. I stared at his corpse in disbelief, and felt I was going to break down in tears. But with a sudden, violent start, my rage overcame my sorrow, and I seized my sword, leaping onto Bloodlust and charging him back into the fray. I chopped down men mercilessly, my sword flying, blood spraying, each drop like balm to my battered heart. I looked wildly around for the sultan, but he had disappeared. He had fled, coward that he was, and the rest of his army soon followed him, leaving us the hollow victors.

Mikhail had remained with the General's body, and looked up at my return. He rose steadily to his feet, and bowed as I dismounted.
