Helena spent the afternoon cleaning the mud from her shoes and giving them a spit shine. Virginia had left before lunch and Helena had spent an inordinate amount of time trying to decide what the wear to the picnic the following day. She had decided that the dress she was wearing was, really, her best dress and had spent her time on her shoes instead.

A knock on the door brought her to her feet. 'It's pretty late for a visitor,' she thought as she opened the front door. Timmy, the general store delivery boy, shifted nervously on his feet, sweeping his hat off of his head.

“Good evening, Mrs. Donovan.”

“Timmy, I didn't order anything. Is something wrong?”

“No, Ma'am. Miss Morrisey said she'd give me a dollar if I bring you to the hotel by dark.”

Helena could not suppress her smile, “She did, huh? Did she say why?”

“No, Ma'am. Just said, 'Have her here, in her room, by dark'. She said you would know which room that was.”

“Her room or my room?”

Timmy thought for a second, “Well, she said your room but that don't make no sense.”

Helena slipped her feet into her shoes, leaving them unlaced, as she grabbed Timmy's arm and closed the door behind her, loose shoes clunking down the boardwalk, “Yes, it does. Let's go get your dollar.”
