Chapter Five

When I arrived back on Fletcher Street, I discovered that Sal and Jim had beaten me. The two men leaned against the truck, watching as I pulled into the driveway.

“It’s nice to be back here,” Jim remarked as I got out of the jalopy. “I can’t remember the last time I visited your place.”

“I don’t have a pool table,” I said simply. “The only reason you two would have to come here is to see Lemon.”

“That’s all the reason we need,” Sal said. “On top of visitin’ you, of course.”

I rolled my eyes and led them into the kitchen. “Lemon!” I called. “We’re hooo-ooome!”

I heard a shockingly loud meow. Lemon burst into the kitchen, a little yellow blur as she ran straight up to Sal.

“I guess she remembers me,” Sal said, laughing as Lemon rubbed up against his leg repeatedly.

“Kitchen or couch?” I asked, kicking off my shoes and giving a lengthy stretch. It felt good to be back in my own home after such a long day. “If we eat in the living room, I can turn on a movie.”

“A movie sounds nice,” Jim said. He squatted down and held out his hand to Lemon. She sniffed it delicately, then rubbed his palm and purred. “She’s always so friendly.”

I left Sal and Jim to play with Lemon and went to the living room, where I discovered two throw pillows, a drink coaster, and the TV remote had all been knocked onto the floor while I was gone. Shaking my head ruefully, I cleaned everything up and set my sub on the coffee table. Sal and Jim came in, followed closely by Lemon, who went straight over to the coffee table. She didn’t jump up on it or sniff the bag; she merely sat on her haunches and eyed the sun with unflinching focus.

“Yeah, it’s turkey,” I told her. “I’ll share it with you if you don’t knock over my cannoli.” I set the cannoli’s container next to the sub. Lemon spared it only a second’s glance before resuming her vigil of my turkey sub.

“You know Violet, you’ve got a very lovely home,” Jim said, settling on the couch and reclining comfortably. “It’s so much more organized than our place.”

“We knew when we turned the back room into a game room that there wouldn’t be much space for storing car parts,” Sal said reasonably. “I certainly don’t regret making that choice.”

“Maybe the car parts could be stored at the shop,” Jim muttered. Sal pretended not to hear him. Chuckling, I queued up a movie and took a seat in an armchair beside the couch. “To the weekend.”

“The weekend,” Sal and Jim chorused. Jim groaned and started on his second pustie. “I know these are super rich, but I’m treating myself. What a week.”

“The tests?” I asked.

“I swear, I’ve done more grading this week than the rest of the semester put together.” Jim took a large bite out of his pustie. “Okay, may’e ‘ats not tue, ‘ut it’s still a ‘ot.
