Vis rushed over to Dalton, ignoring his mate’s glare and stiff body. Since meeting the shifter, this seemed to be a fairly normal greeting.

“Are you hurt?”

Dalton pushed Vis’ hands away, which were busy checking for injuries. “I’m fine. Annoyed that man grabbed me and not Magnus or Titus.”

“Of course, he grabbed you.” Vis wanted to run his hands all over Dalton’s naked body to make sure his mate was truly okay then thoroughly love on him.

“What do you mean ‘of course’?” Dalton snapped.

“Ah, Vis…” Finn said.

“I mean if I was going to take a hostage, I’d definitely choose a hedgehog shifter. You wouldn’t fight back, and you don’t have any substantial shifter weapons.”

“Foot in mouth,” Finn muttered and, rising from his chair, stepped away and motioned Cas and the bodyguards to join him.

Confused why everyone was backing away but his attention currently on his mate, Vis ignored them. “Dalton, let’s get you home—”

“I’m not substantial?” Dalton exploded.

“What? Oh…” Vis realized his error in wording. “That is not what I meant”—Dalton jerked away from his hands and stepped back— “mate.”

“Ugh! Don’t call me that.”

“I’m going to call you mate because you are my mate,” Vis said firmly. “You were a victim and are substantially important to me. I didn’t mean…”

Dalton’s platinum-blond hair, which always looked a little stiff like he wore a lot of product in it, sprang up and arranged in spikes over his head. Vis was transfixed. He’d seen the local Avenger’s sprite mate’s hair do something similar, and it meant Deakin was about to have an angry outburst or melt down.

Vis was now painfully aroused. He sensed his mate’s passion, and though disappointed it wasn’t sexual, Vis was turned on. He loved Dalton’s nature, his snappiness, the depth, and contrary-at-times attitude. Right now, he wanted to open a portal and coax his mate through to the guild. There Dalton would be safe, and they could share their mate passion.

“I’m not a victim! How other people behave and what they choose to do to me or others doesn’t make me a victim. It makes them pricks and completely responsible.”

“Okay, I get your point.” Vis did get it. Dalton wasn’t responsible for what other people did, even when they did something to him. They were responsible for themselves and had to deal with the consequences. “Let’s go home and talk, mate.”

“You’re so annoying!”

Dalton’s spikey hair moved all over his head before sharp pieces shot off directly toward Vis. Vis had never seen anything like it and had to duck and weave to avoid being struck.

“Holy shit! Ow, they sting.” Batting away the spikes, a few poking him in the arms, chest, and one in his forehead, he looked down in amazement at the platinum quills on the floor. “Your hair is actually quills?”

“Well, what did you expect? I’m a freaking hedgehog shifter.”

“So fun, right?” Finn walked over to Dalton and patted his hair.

“Stop it.” Dalton batted Finn’s hands away. “You’re messing up the oil balance.”

Chuckling, Vis crouched down and began collecting the quills.
