CHAPTER 14

Brock walked into the Golden Rail and stood looking around for Tree but saw no sign of him. He walked over to the bartender and asked, “Hey, Mickey, you seen Tree Forney? He was supposed to meet me here.”

“Yeah, Brock, he’s here. He just went upstairs with Charlene a little while ago. He ought not be too long. She said he don’t never take too long, and that’s why she likes to entertain him. You want a drink?”

“Yeah, I need one,” Brock answered. “Make it a double.” He watched intently while Mickey poured, and as soon as the glass was full, he tossed it back and emptied it with one gulp and slammed the glass down so Mickey could pour the second shot in the same glass. He hesitated for a couple of moments for the fire to die down before splashing the second shot down his throat.

“You threw that one back like it was medicine,” Mickey commented.

“It was medicine,” Brock said. “I needed it to clear my head out. Pour me one more and I’ll sit down at a table and wait for Tree.” As Mickey predicted, Tree was soon downstairs, and when he saw Brock sitting at a table, he signaled Mickey for a drink. Then he joined Brock at the table.

“How’d it go with Reese and the boys today?” Tree asked when he sat down.

“Nothing’s changed,” Brock answered. “They’re still bellyaching about bein’ tied down in that jail. I told ’ em jail ain’t supposed to be like a Sunday picnic.” He tossed his whiskey back, slammed the empty glass down on the table and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “I’m tired of this standoff, and I’ve decided to do something about it. I’m takin’ those boys outta that jail tonight.”

That was certainly news of great interest to Tree. “Is that a fact?” he responded. “How you gonna do that?”

“We are gonna do it, my friend. We are gonna take ’em outta there. And here’s how we’re gonna do it.” He paused to look around them to make sure no one was close enough to hear him talking. Then he repeated the procedure that Reese had preached to him in the jail a short time before.

Tree was almost stunned to suddenly discover an aggressive side to the man he had always read as a talker and not a fighter. When he asked him if he was sure he wanted to start with an outright killing of the sheriff, Brock told him it was the only choice they had. “We’ve talked about how we can break them outta that jail till we’re blue in the face,” Brock said. “I’ve thought from the start that the only way to get it done is to put that sheriff down, then go in there and get our men outta there. If you ain’t got the stomach for it, I need to know right now, and I’ll do it by myself.”

Tree could not believe he was hearing this coming out of Brock Salter.
