A couple of hours later, they were picnicking in Tessa’s bed. Naked, with only the quilt pulled across their laps, they dug into Chinese takeout and sipped ice-cold white wine.

Halfway through the Kung Pao chicken, though, Noah thought they should talk about a few things. After all, he’d had a plan when he came over here—in spite of the fact that he hadn’t stuck to it. Although, in his defense, he thought, how the hell could he keep from touching her when she looked so damn good?

Glancing at her now, with her tumbled hair and bare breasts, he felt his resolve weaken again as it had pretty much all night. It had probably been a huge mistake to go to bed with her, but he could hardly bemoan that when all he could think of was sex with her again. She got to him as no other woman ever had. He’d come here to reinforce the idea of staying away from her and had instead spent the night having the best sex of his life. Before that all started up again—and damned if he didn’t want it to—it was time for reality to be reckoned with.

“What’s causing the frown?” Tessa asked. “Already regretting tonight?”

Did she know him that well?

“No,” he said, because no matter what, he wouldn’t regret what had happened between them. “But—”

She took a sip of wine and swung her hair back behind her shoulders. “I knew there was a but.”

He gave her a half smile. He’d talked more, laughed more with Tessa than he had with any other woman he’d ever known. Even during sex, the laughter and talking hadn’t stopped and that was new for him, too. Usually sex was just a physical need that he was looking to satisfy. He didn’t form relationships, didn’t want to chat or laugh or connect in any way with whatever woman happened to be in his bed.

Tessa was different. And he wasn’t sure how to react to that.

“The but is, that this—between us—it’s not going anywhere, Tessa.”

She sipped at her wine again, tipped her head to one side and asked, “Are you trying to let me down easily?”

When she said it like that, it sounded stupid. “I just don’t want you making more of this than there is.”

“Well, thank you,” she said and picked up a piece of chicken. She popped it into her mouth, then sucked at her finger to get the sauce off.

Watching that made Noah’s dick go to stone—as it had been for most of the night. Taking a breath, he said, “I only meant that we were doing the ‘just once’ thing and now that’s done.”

“And more than once,” she pointed out.

“Yeah, that’s true. But we need some ground rules now, before we go to London.”

“Okay,” she said, the soul of reason, “what did you have in mind?”

Well, that was the question, wasn’t it? What he wanted, was Tessa. Again. What he didn’t want, were messy complications. So he took the honesty route and told her exactly that.
