“I am so sorry, shit,” I said, paralyzed by my own idiocy. I couldn’t even get my arms to work to mop up the puddle of water, never mind try to save my poor shirt.

“Hey, it’s okay.” Alex’s tone had gone both soothing and firm as he stood from his own chair. “It was an accident, and I’ve spilled more than my fair share of things on this table. Despite the outward appearance I put on, I’m actually kind of clumsy.”

I wasn’t sure if I believed that or not, but it calmed me enough to drape my cloth napkin over the puddle.

Alex did the same, then circled the table. “And this is a fresh stain so we can probably save the shirt. Take it off.”

“Um.” I totally regretted not wearing an undershirt now.

“I know a trick for getting stains out of silk. Trust me?”

I did trust him. Something about Alex screamed with sincerity and command, his own belief that he could solve this problem for me in his posture and expression. I carefully unbutton the shirt so the stain didn’t touch other parts of the material, then handed it over to Alex. He strode out of the dining room and into the kitchen, so I followed him, absurdly self-conscious now that I was half-naked. My skin prickled with a slight chill and I crossed my arms over my chest for the tiniest bit of warmth.

Alex spread the shirt out on his massive center island, poked inside the cabinet beneath his sink, and came up with two pieces of white cloth that looked kind of like a cut-up t-shirt. He dabbed at the stain with one of the cloth pieces. “Can you do me a favor? There is a bottle of lemon juice in the refrigerator. Grab it for me, and then run water in the sink so we can get it lukewarm.”

“Um, okay.” Digging into his big, stainless-steel fridge felt a little weird but I had permission to snoop. The cold interior chilled my chest and arms even more, and I shivered. Alex definitely didn’t keep his house very warm. The food selection was smaller than I expected, but if the guy spent a lot of time traveling, fresh food was probably bought in small amounts. It was mostly condiments, juice, a container that probably had some kind of leftovers, a bottle of wine, and a six-pack of beer.

I grabbed the green bottle of lemon juice and put it on the counter near Alex. Then I turned on the hot water in the sink. It gushed out and the sudden noise startled me. “So, uh, what are you doing?” I asked.

“Old trick I learned.” Alex seemed to be deliberately avoiding looking at me. “Equal parts lemon juice and lukewarm water. Dab it on the stain, and then hand wash like normal. It should prevent the stain from setting.” He kept dabbing at the spot. “So, you just bought this, huh?”

“Yeah, it was completely impulsive and not planned. I was walking
