I woke up wide awake. There was no lingering sleepiness, no trying to remember where I was as the cream curtains with white large, green tropical trees on them came into my view. There wasnât even the surprise of a heated presence in my bed behind me. I was on my side, and while Max wasnât touching me, memories of last night rushed to the forefront. The way heâd simply shown up. Iâd been so deep into my current fantasy read filled with all things faeries and vampires and wolf shifters, heâd startled me.
What surprised me more was how he didnât just take a seat, but waited until he was invited, and then how smoothly conversation flowed. Perhaps it was because weâd already been so intimate with each other, but I couldnât remember a time when Iâd met a guy and had simply fallen into the getting to know you conversations with such ease and comfort.
And when he fell asleep, practically mid-sentence talking about his life?
Freaking adorable. So was his profile, the parting of his lips as he slept, and the quiet breaths he made next to me while I grinned at him and went back to my book.
My dadâs side of the family flew in today and I knew weâd spend some of the afternoon and evening together with them. But that was later, and before then I just had the spa appointment with Bridget and her other bridesmaids. Until then, I had nothing to do except ready my books.
And for a woman whoâd spent the last six years working sixty-plus hours a week, a day of mostly nothing was as equally torturous as it was heavenly.
Behind me, Max stirred, brushing his legs as he moved and bumping into mine. That brief touch sent a new spark of awareness through me, and I carefully rolled to my back and to my other side. I didnât want to wake him if he was still sleeping.
He was, and even though his chiseled features softened while he slept, I still vividly remembered the strength of that body and all the wicked things he could do. My legs moved, core heating and as I did, a still, low ache reminded me in more precise detail how large and how powerful he was.
I was still sore, and that sucked, because we only had a few days left, and that meant I couldnât wake him up and have a repeat of yesterday morningâ¦
But I could give him what he hadnât taken when I offered.
Reaching out, I slipped my hand beneath the sheet draped over his chest. As soon as I met his warm, muscled flesh, his stomach tightened. A tiny moan slipped through his full lips. I brushed my hand over his stomach, keeping my eyes on Max in case he woke up and didnât want this, but as I shifted my weight and came up to my knees, he only stirred enough to fall back asleep.
I pulled the sheet down, moving on my knees to get it out of the way completely as I resettled my hand at his lower stomach.
