Hi, beautiful. I can’t wait for tonight with you. I love you. <3

“Who’s that?” Tara asked.

“No one,” I replied, more cheerfully than I’d intended. I did not want a lecture right now. I knew Tara wouldn’t approve of Rick’s profession of love, not until he proved himself. Which in Tara’s eyes would require him to lasso the moon, George Bailey fashion.

“No one doesn’t make your cheeks blush and turn you giddy, Ginger. It’s Rick, isn’t it?”

“I plead the Fifth.”

“Ginger! C’mon, you know you can’t let your guard down with him. He’s been in your life a quick minute and you’re already googly-eyed over him. He’s a piece of trash for leaving you, and he’s just going to stink up your life all over again.”

Aaand, cue lecture.

“Yeah, well, it’s easy for you to say with your perfect, doting husband who risked going to jail to protect his family. Mine left our family for $1,000 and a dime bag of coke.”

“You mean a dime bag of pot? I don’t think you can get cocaine for ten bucks.”

“Whatever. It was the eighties. I have no idea what kind of drugs Rick did or what they cost,” I huffed. “That’s not my point. Love hasn’t been easy for me, because while everyone else seems to find someone so easily, it’s been forty years and I’m still single, still lonely, still searching for love. The way I see it, if the man who once loved me—and yeah, also ruined me—wants to make a repeat performance, it’s my decision if I want to go through it. And honestly, I have nothing left to lose. So why not? Rant over.”

Tara’s lips parted as if she was about to argue, then she closed her mouth, reached for me, and hugged me there in that cold, sterile space.

“You’re right. I’m just protective of you because I love you too, y’know.” She stepped back, hands still on my shoulders. “I’ll support whatever you want, whatever you need.”

I smiled at the only person who understood me. “You know, I’ve never thanked you for always being a constant—”

“Pain in the ass?” Tara grinned.

“I was gonna say in my life, but yeah, that too.”

“Ready to go?” Tara asked, heading toward the ladder.

I was leading the way up the steps when I nearly collided into Peace’s legs as she rushed down through the narrow opening. Her face was flushed, eyes wide with panic.

“Someone’s here!” Her breaths came fast and hard.

I held back my I told you so and instead asked, “What do we do?” I felt my own panic rising. I wanted to clamber out of this death trap before we ended up locked in …but I also didn’t know what was waiting outside of that door.
