I had no idea what time it was, but I could see the sun peeking in through the window. I didn’t think I’d gotten ten minutes of quality sleep. Thoughts of Vic played in my head and how stupid I’d been not to push her away. I’d seen her coming, and I recognized that look in her eye, although I’d never seen it directed at me before. But my body froze, and my mind fled. I stood there like a puppet on a string.

Getting up, I raised my arms above my head and stood on my tiptoes to get a full-body stretch. I was short, but the couch offered little room to spread out. As I was doing my unorthodox yoga pose, Hazel entered the living room.

Seeing me in this stance must have tickled her because she grabbed her side laughing. I immediately relaxed my body, and I felt better just hearing that sound. She looked much more at ease, and her body language comforted me.

“What are you doing? Trying to scare away those bears you warned me about?”

Now I was laughing, thinking back to that first day we’d met all those years ago. The fondness in her tone made me think sleep was the trick, and she was ready to listen.

“If you recall, I said there were no bears.”

She chuckled. “That’s true. But just so we’re both clear, you had no idea that it was.”

“Maybe not. But did that matter?”

Now she looked at me differently, and I wasn’t sure what had changed.

“Did you know?” Her face was sad, and the lightheartedness was gone.

“No. But I knew you could tell I was full of shit. It was my first job. Of course, I was—”

“Roar. You know what I’m asking. Did you know Vic was in love with you?”

I honestly didn’t know she was asking that, but it explained the mood change.

“You want to sit?” I reached out my hand, and, to my surprise, she let me lead her to the couch. “Please believe me when I say that I had no idea. We’ve been friends for years, and never once did she tell me she had feelings for me.”

Staring at me like she was trying to figure something out, she finally said, “But, Rory, you know things that people don’t say. You’re telling me you didn’t pick up anything from her?”

I thought back to when Vic and I met to see if my perspective had changed, knowing what I know now. To me, it seemed apparent we both felt the same way about relationships. After our first day of work, we were at a bar drinking, and she said to me, “Cheers to having the freedom to find what we’re looking for.” And I responded with, “And the wisdom to know what we don’t want—something serious.” We clinked our glasses together, which was the start of our friendship.

Replaying all our times together, I remembered her hugging me and holding my hand, but at the same time, she was always my wing-woman, so nothing seemed off.
