CHAPTER ELEVEN

KANE

Release her.

When it came to JoJo, it appeared I couldn’t say no, even when it was in my best interest.

I hadn’t given her the normal speech. While it was true that it took more trust on my part with every client, it was exceptionally so with JoJo.

I hadn’t asked what kind of trouble her daughter was in. I wasn’t even sure I’d want to be involved . . . though now wasn’t the time to act like I had any scruples when it came to the accused. I highly doubted it was the worst problem I’d represented.

But what if this was all an elaborate plot hatched by Alma? What if it was all to gather intelligence or set a trap? What if I was falling for whatever Alma was up to because I had a weakness when it came to her sister?

Alma couldn’t know that.

She had no way to see how much JoJo intrigued me, although she might be aware of how much she irritated me. However, after that Labor Day weekend in the Hamptons, I hadn’t mentioned her again.

And when Alma brought her up on occasion, I changed the subject. Or ignored her as I’d learned to do over the years.

Maybe my silence had given me away.

My almost ex-wife was like a shark. She had this uncanny sense about things. It was one of the reasons I’d been drawn to her.

How did you ever think she was attractive?

“Can we at least discuss something tonight? At least let me sign a retainer for your services.”

Smart. She was trying to hook me. And I could hardly think straight with her so close. How did she sound so unaffected?

“Am I representing you? Or your daughter?”

Her mouth rolled from one side to the other like she was having trouble keeping it closed. So maybe not completely unaffected. Because there was little doubt she wanted to kill me right about now.

“You can at least give me something to sign,” she grated out.

“Fair enough.” I tilted my head to fight the urge to kiss that pout off her lips. “While this is far more preferable to the other attire you seem to favor—” I fingered the silk fabric at her collar. It was a mistake. My fingers touched her skin. It was soft. Smooth. Cool. And goosebumps rose on her flesh. She couldn’t give me that power. The power to make her tingle. “Can you put more clothes on?”

Abruptly she let go of where she’d fisted my lapels. The fabric was wrinkled from her grip. She tried to step back, but my hands didn’t get the fervent message from my brain to release her.

Wordlessly, she smashed the emergency stop button again. The old elevator car jerked into motion again. She wobbled on her feet, but I held her steady.

She wiggled to get loose. We were so close that her body brushed against mine, eliciting a reaction I hadn’t thought possible anymore. Alma and I hadn’t been intimate pretty much since we’d wed. My hand did just fine when it was needed.
