SARAH

Sarah didn’t even stop to think.

She just clutched Nisha’s hand and ran.

The pitch-black darkness flickered with light. Gunshots split through the silence. But that wasn’t the only sound. The infected. Screaming. Gasping. Groaning. Panic in the voices of these military men, all wielding guns. All firing wildly at the infected.

Sarah didn’t look back. She couldn’t afford to. Not anymore. She just held Nisha’s hand. Ran as fast as she could down this dark country lane. She couldn’t stop thinking about the creepy leader of this small military group. The way he’d looked at her. That glint in his eye, as he’d scanned her body from head to toe. She knew that look. She’d seen that look in men’s eyes before.

Dean.

All the times he’d looked at her like that.

All the times his friends looked at her like that…

Her skin crawled.

A bitter taste of sickness filled her mouth.

No. Don’t think about that right now.

Don’t let that debilitate you right now.

She held Nisha’s hand. Nisha’s hand felt cold. It was shaking, too. Poor kid. She was lucky she couldn’t hear a thing. The infected snarls. The blast of the gunshots. Better to just face the darkness of the road ahead. Better to just hold on to Sarah’s hand. Better just to run. Even if running was beginning to cripple Sarah.

She looked down at Nisha, who was lagging behind a little bit, and she saw something that filled her with dread.

Nisha. She was staring off into the distance. But… blood was oozing from her nostrils. Trickling out of her ears. Dripping from her eyelids.

Fuck. She was having one of her episodes again. The kind of episode she’d had on the road earlier. The one Sarah saved her from. She was going to collapse. She was going to collapse, and what was Sarah supposed to do? Because the infected were close. And the military guys were close. If she collapsed, Nisha would slow her down. She wouldn’t be able to run very fast. She couldn’t carry anything too heavy for too long as it was. Really took it out on her back.

Nisha looked up at her. So pale. Gunshots flashed behind her. Sarah swore she could see one of those figures—infected or uninfected, she wasn’t sure—running down the road towards them. They didn’t have time. They didn’t have time for one of Nisha’s episodes. They didn’t have time for…

Suddenly, Nisha convulsed forward, violently. Blood splattered out of her mouth. Sarah’s skin turned cold. Fuck. Had she been shot? Had these fuckers shot her?

She looked down at Nisha’s back. Expected to see a gaping bullet wound. Expected to see a mass of blood and flesh.

But… there was nothing there.

Nothing at all.

Sarah stared down at her. Shaking. Watching as more blood oozed from Nisha’s nostrils, from her lips. This kid was suffering. Something was happening to her. She needed to get her away from here. And she needed to get her away from here fast.

“It’ll be okay,” Sarah muttered. Even though, honestly, she wasn’t sure how things could possibly be okay right now.
