Chapter Eighteen
Once outside Andrew swept Anne off her feet and kissed her passionately. ‘I’ve been longing to do that for the past two years,’ he said, lifting his head so they could draw breath.
‘And I’ve wanted you to do it.’ She laughed.
‘Where next?’ he asked. ‘Mere Lane to speak to Gordon?’
She nodded, longing for him to kiss her again. ‘Do we tell him and Teddy what we’ve discovered or wait until we meet your sister, Jane?’
‘We’ll tell them. There’s no need to keep it secret now, is there? After all, they are already aware there’s a possibility that you might be related to them in some way.’
Happily, Gordon was at the house, having dropped in on his way to deliver some fruit that he had picked up from the docks to a nearby wholesaler, and he and Teddy were in deep conversation. Apparently, Teddy had not gone into work that morning as his chest was bad and Gordon was going to put in extra hours doing his deliveries. Amy was playing with a doll, but immediately held up her arms to Anne when she entered the kitchen. Joan had just made a pot of tea, so fetched a couple more cups and filled them up for Anne and Andrew.
‘To what do we owe the pleasure of this visit?’ she asked. ‘And where’s he come from?’ She pointed to Andrew.
‘We’ve something to tell you,’ Anne said, her excitement bubbling over. ‘And to show you.’ She dropped the packet of photos on the table. ‘I also want to ask Gordon did he know that Da’s mother’s maiden name was Graham?’
Joan picked up the packet and took out the photos and began to look through them, only half-listening to the conversation.
Gordon said, ‘I did, yes. Our grandmother’s name was Katherine Graham. I found out some of this from Da. Surely you could have found that out yourself when you were up in Scotland?’
Anne’s face was flushed with relief. ‘I did but I wanted to check; as it was I had too much going on in my head. I thought that was the name that Uncle Donald had told me. Where there any more Grahams?’
‘Grandma had a cousin who had twin daughters, but I don’t know their names,’ said Gordon. ‘Albert might know.’
‘But will he want to help me?’
‘I could ask him for you,’ Teddy said, looking slightly discomforted. ‘Joan and I are to visit the hotel for a week. The fresh sea air will be good for me.’
‘That’s a turn up for the books,’ Anne said. ‘I thought you two were at daggers drawn still.’
‘I think Mother’s death has mellowed him,’ Teddy said. ‘And I think he’s concerned I’ll be next because of my chest.’
‘What about Amy?’ Anne asked, nursing the little girl. ‘Are you taking her with you?’
Joan said hesitantly, ‘I was going to ask you if you’d mind staying here for a week and looking after her? Gladys thinks it would give me a break that way. What do you say?’
‘I could take her to Eastham.
