Chapter 10

“If they have immunity, they can attack us, right?” Shadow asked from the passenger seat. They drove in Oscar’s car, at a safe distance from the one Duke and Alexander were taking.

“Let’s hope not,” Francis answered from the backseat. “My superiors can’t know about this. Once we get to their destination, we’ll be on the lookout. Only when the coast is clear can we trespass onto their property and investigate it. I might lose my job for this, but we’re dealing with powerful werewolves here.”

Oscar glanced over his shoulder. “You can stay behind, if you want. I don’t want you to lose your job, Francis.”

Francis sighed. “It’s a risk I’m willing to take. If something happens, there might be a way to deny them immunity. It wouldn’t look good on the reputation of whoever granted it, unless they don’t care.”

“It won’t be easy,” Shadow said as he looked at the car far ahead. Anything could happen. To him, having Francis around was a liability. Duke and Alexander could either use him as a hostage, or Francis would need protection. He rested his head back and massaged his temples with his fingers.

“How are you feeling?” Oscar asked.

Shadow tightened his lips. The headache had become too much of a distraction. “I’m okay. Don’t lose them, or we won’t see them again.” He glanced behind him when Francis patted his shoulder. “Thanks, Lieutenant Francis.”

Francis chuckled. “Just call me Francis. At least for now, I have to count on you two,” he said. “We won’t be able to call for backup if we need to, but I’ll use my knowledge to the best of my abilities. Let’s try to get the other paintings back.”

For the remaining time, they continued to follow the other car. They drove out of the city of Treno into a rural area. Oscar had to keep his distance since there were barely any cars on the road.

Shadow noticed the car making a turn to another road without signaling. He glanced at Oscar, who kept his attention on the other vehicle. “We’re heading into the woods. Do you think it’s a trap?”

“Probably. We’ll have to find out,” Oscar answered. “If things get complicated, make sure you take Francis with you.”

“There are two of them. Dealing with Duke Augustus was already hard on us both,” Shadow said. He looked over his shoulder. “Francis, we’ll keep them away, and you run if you see things going south. At least in the middle of the woods we can go all out.”

Oscar hummed. “Then we’ll all get out of there if it’s too much for us to handle. Still, our main goal is to go in unnoticed and retrieve the paintings.”

“Got it,” Shadow uttered and looked forward as they made the same turn.

They were just in time to see them driving onto a dirt path in the middle of the road. As they followed, they entered the woods. Oscar’s car barely fit on the path. Shadow lowered his window and listened for any sounds that could alert him.
