CHAPTER 10

Kendra expertly maneuvered the small boat around obstructions and islands that were once the tops of mountains. Gatún Lake curved as it narrowed through Soberania National Park on one side and the protected Arraiján Forest on the other.

“Commander, I suggest we pull off the river under the Puente Centenario bridge and find a way up on top to take your pictures. On that side of the canal, there are three sets of old locks; the single lane Pedro Miguel, which is only one lock that feeds into Miraflores Lake. But the Miraflores locks have two lanes that empty into the Pacific Ocean. Then there are the new locks, the Cocoli, that are off to the right with one lane and three locks. From the bridge, though, you should have a good view of everything. The concrete sides are tall enough to keep you hidden.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Although Andrew had been through the Pacific locks several times, he didn’t know them nearly as well as the Caribbean side. Before he could say anything else, his cell phone rang. “Buchanan.”

“Dude…” It was Grant. “Where the hell are you?”

“On a mission for Charley.” She had recently pulled Grant’s ass out of a seriously bad situation, so he was familiar with the mysterious woman. Andrew wasn’t sure how much more he was allowed to tell his friend so the less he said, the better at this point.

“Right. Okay. Charley. Of course.” Grant gave a wry chuckle. “Have you’ve spoken to Ryker?”

“Uh, no. Why? What’s going on?” He’d been avoiding Ryker and Ajax, the founders of the Holt Agency. He hadn’t made his decision what he was going to do after he finished this cruise contract.

“I’m not in a position to say.” That was SEAL speak for whatever he was doing was top secret and too many ears were around him.

“So, you’ve talked to Ryker. Did he receive a mission and assign it to you?”

“Yep.”

“And I take it your mission is on board the cruise ship and you need my help.” It figured; the minute he left, someone needed him.

“Absolutely. Please tell the captain to help us out.” That didn’t take as long as it could have. Sometimes one-way conversations were like the old Password game show.

“Hand this phone to Captain Phillips,” Andrew ordered.

“Commander Buchanan, is that you?” Andrew recognized the captain’s voice.

“Yes, sir. I don’t know what the man, or men, in front of you need but I can tell you it’s of vital importance to what we’re all doing. Please give him whatever he asks for and it would probably be better for you if you didn’t ask too many questions.”

“There are several people here asking for the manifest.” Andrew had no idea why Grant, and probably Holden, Tavis, and Keene would need the list of guests and their cabin numbers, but they obviously did. He would trust these men with his life, and by extension, trust the lives of all the guests on board.

“The men in front of you used
