Chapter Three KENDALL FRANCOIS
The Poughkeepsie Killer
The serial killer’s fixation on prostitutes, in particular—who are often trapped in the shadows of society and despair and, as such, are given less consideration when it comes to visibility, sympathy, and protection—is well demonstrated in this chapter with the focus on American serial killer, Kendall Francois. Referred to as the “Poughkeepsie Killer,” Francois targeted female sex trade workers in Poughkeepsie, New York, murdering eight prostitutes in a two-year span between 1996 and 1998 before he was brought to justice at age twenty-seven and ultimately given a sentence of life behind bars. Unfortunately, this came too little, too late for Francois’s victims, except for one who managed to escape the brutal killer’s rage and lived to tell about it, helping to bring him down in the process. However, even this could not prevent Kendall Francois from joining Jack the Ripper and other serial murderers of prostitutes in killing one after another with an almost insatiable quest to strip them of their dignity and take away their life, as though they were worthless. In so doing, most of these serial killers received their own comeuppance for their actions, even as other sex workers continue to ply their trade on and off the streets of America and elsewhere. Kendall Francois was no exception.

When one thinks of serial killers, the common misconception is that they are almost always white males. This assumption is fueled in large part by the media, as they tend to focus much more on this particular segment of serial murderers and those they choose to target, which can include minorities, children, homeless, and prostitutes. While white men, often middle-aged, constitute a large percentage of serial killers, the truth is other racial and ethnic groups are also well represented as serial murderers.
According to the Radford University Serial Killer Database, in the decade of 2010, males constituted nearly 93 percent of all serial killers worldwide, with only 7 percent of the serial murderers female.1 No surprise there (though the percentage of female serial killers was actually at 37 percent a century earlier). An even higher percentage of serial killers in the United States are male, comprising 94 percent of the total in this country in the 2010 decade (with more than two-thirds of all serial killers perpetrating their murders in the United States).2
However, when it comes to male serial killers, they are racially and ethnically diverse. The database found that between the decades of 1900 and 2010, nearly 52 percent of serial killers in the United States were white, while nearly 40 percent were African American, with a little more than 7 percent classified as Hispanic, and Native Americans and Asians comprising around 1 percent each of serial murderers.3
Surprisingly, for the decade beginning 2010, the database showed that only around 31 percent of the serial killers in this country were white, with nearly 60 percent African American, disproportionate to the total United States population figures for African Americans at just under 13 percent in 2010.4 Hispanics made up nearly 9 percent of the serial killers during the decade.
