16. Never Have I Ever
âThat was pretty weird, right?â I ask Taryn as we travel down the desolate dirt road.
He shrugs. âWhat, Pressley? Not much different than anything else weâve experienced in here.â
I suppose heâs right. Iâm a troll; heâs a dwarf. Weâve done things we could never possibly do in real life, and it all seems so natural. Heâs a regular Snow White when it comes to pets, and I can go into a barbaric rage and not end up in jail for it. Why wouldnât a supposed death knight have emotional problems and mood swings? Maybe thatâs why itâs such a rare class.
We pass the last of the major towns surrounding Seascape, and for the next two days, we only encounter small villages. More often than not, village is overstating it, and theyâre just a couple of farmhouses that offer a room to weary travelers.
Not many people take the eastern road to the mountains. The Mythroad is the safer and more populous route that cuts straight across the island. Iâm sure once the portal is opened in Vanaria, it will be used less and less.
Itâs unfortunate for those that depend on travelers and tourism, but such is the price of progress.
Weâre about a dayâs ride from the base of the mountain, even with Taryn using Strong Wind to speed up our travels. The journey is long and boring. What I wouldnât give for some in-game music to help pass the time.
I check every tab of my user interface, but thereâs no such luck. Instead, weâre forced to rely our own devices, playing âI Spyâ and âNever Have I Ever.â
Jon taps his finger against his chin. âNever have I everâ¦flown on an airplane.â
I put down one of my fingers, leaving two up. Taryn still has all three of his.
âNo shit?â Jon tilts his head. âI thought I was one of the few people to have never flown. Iâve got a terrible fear of heights. Canât even imagine looking down from the inside of a plane.â
Iâm surprised Iâm the only one who has flown in a plane. âItâs not so bad. When youâre up that high, it doesnât even look real. Itâs like staring down at some kidâs playset. The trees, the cars, they all look like models. Taryn, have you really never flown?â
He gives me an incredulous look. âTo where? My family never had money for vacations. My vacation was a long walk through Central Park.â He laughs. âOr a weekend at your place.â
I smile. âWe had a lot of those.â
Thinking back on all the times I flew in a plane, there were too many to count. There was a time when we would take vacations as a family. I remember playing on the beach in Mexico with Maria, my first nanny. Dad was on the phone practically all day. Maria took me down to the beach and we built sandcastles.
Or the time we flew to Colorado to ski. I ended up building a snowman outside of our cabin with Rosa because Mom had a meeting and couldnât go to our skiing lessons.
