Smartly dressed and looking like any other guy in the place, she ripped her shoulder from his hold and bellowed at him over the music. âGet away from me!â
He looked disappointed, her anger not expected. âI wanted to see you again, Chloe. You look so beautiful.â His eyes were much less discreet than Tomâs had been, and she felt her skin crawl as he ogled her.
âCan we go somewhere? Talk?â He touched his ear, indicating the sound level was too much.
She shook her head. âI donât want to talk to you. I never want to talk to you. Get out of my life. Do you understand?â
He grabbed her arm in an attempt to stop her from leaving.
She fought herself free and slammed her hands against his chest, barging him away from her. âI said, leave me alone!â she yelled, and then turned and forced her way through the dancers, searching the sea of faces for Laura and Gabby. He followed behind, shoving and pushing in order to keep up.
About to scream, she finally caught Lauraâs eye as she pushed people out of the way, ignoring their disapprovals. Laura immediately stopped dancing at the sight of her and Danny right behind.
âWhat the fuck!â
Chloe couldnât hear it, she only saw her friend mouth the words, but relief filled her as she neared Laura.
Laura strode towards them both. âChloe, are you okay?â
âIâm fine. Iâm fine,â she said, breathless.
âIâm just here to see Chloe,â he shouted, a smile fixed in place as if all of this was perfectly reasonable. âIâm not here to cause trouble.â
âJust being here is causing trouble,â Laura shouted back.
Chloe moved to distance herself from him, but a sideways glance from Danny meant he saw it. He reached for her hand and gripped it. She wrenched it away, but in doing so, she managed to smack it hard into a fellow clubberâs arm as he walked past her. âSorry,â she said to the man. âI didnât mean to do that.â
âHey,â he barked at her. âYou want to be more careful, bitch.â After a death glare, he turned away.
Danny bumped into her as he launched towards the man, thunderous fury in his face. Chloe knew why. Danny would be furious that Chloe had been spoken to the way she had. He shoved the man, who returned one of his own, trapping Chloe between them as they tussled. Danny was ready for a fight, and one he looked well-matched to win. But his anger was intense and disproportionate for the situation, and he looked like he could kill this man given half the chance. Although the man was a low-life and probably deserved everything he would get, she wouldnât be responsible for him getting battered because of Dannyâs overreaction.
She shoved at Danny, separating the pair. âStop it, Danny!â
He moved quickly, the red mist in his eyes still wanting to land a glancing blow to the man. In doing so, he barged into her, knocking her out of the way, causing her to stumble and hold out her hand for balance.
