Chapter Four

Mariella focused on her middle child. “What do you mean?”

Rafe placed his phone face down on the linen tablecloth. “I was doing some research online.” He threw a pointed look at Luc. “While I was not watching entertainment gossip shows.”

“What did you find?” Gabe asked, sitting forward.

“There’s a specialist in Switzerland who’s had remarkable success with patients whose injuries are similar to Dad’s. Dr. Cedric Aebischer runs a private practice in Zurich—quite busy from what I understand. But I spoke with him directly yesterday while Elana was at one of the fashion houses and explained the situation. His admin assistant just texted that he’s willing to fly to Santa Barbara.”

Mariella’s heart stammered in her chest. Could this be the lifeline they needed to get Harrison well again? “Dios mío! Why didn’t you say something right away?”

“I wanted to be certain he was willing to work with Dad first.” His brown eyes were gentle as he stared at her. “You’ve had so much to deal with this past month. I didn’t want to give you false hope.”

“Nice work on locating the doctor,” Luc said, and a lump formed in Mariella’s throat as her older boy gave his younger brother an approving nod.

“Thank you,” Rafe answered.

Mariella opened her mouth to tell Rafe how proud she was of him for not giving up on his father when Ana let out a hysterical sob.

“Oh, God, what if it doesn’t work? Where will we be then?” she wailed, throwing her hands into the air.

“Histrionics won’t help anyone,” Mariella said quietly, but Ana continued crying.

Mariella sighed as Gabe placed a hand on his mother’s slender shoulder. It grated on Mariella’s nerves to watch her sister lean into Gabe. Ana didn’t deserve comfort from anyone. She wasn’t even close to Harrison.

“What happens to the company if Harrison doesn’t survive?” Ana asked after a few moments. She blinked rapidly and dabbed at her eyes, but Mariella could have sworn her tears were forced. Ana had been able to fake cry like a pro since they were girls.

“Harrison will survive,” Mariella answered in a tone that brooked no argument.

Of course, her sister immediately began to argue. “But what if he doesn’t? Who’s in charge? Where do the assets go? Does Harrison have a will?”

Mariella had no desire to get into the business of the Fixer with Ana. Thankfully, Gabe spoke before she had to answer.

“Marshall International will continue to operate as it has until Uncle Harrison recovers.” He tugged his hand away from Ana. “You know this family has always been his prime concern. There are plans in place to protect everyone if the unthinkable happens.” He held up a finger when his mother would have interrupted. “Which it won’t.”

“If you say so, darling,” Ana said, her tone saccharine sweet. “The most important thing is that family sticks together at times like this. Isn’t that right, Mariella?”

Mariella felt her eyes narrow as she stared at her sister. Something in Ana’s tone made the words feel ominous.
