He was angry and confused. Their marriage had been effectively over for more than a year. He’d settled for that, so why did it bother him that his wife was having a relationship with someone else? Why did it hurt when he thought of them together? It was as if, after twenty years of marriage, he needed another twenty to get her properly out of his system. He knew it was ridiculous, but certainly something inside him was reluctant to let go.

Presumably this bloke’s two boys had been as ignorant of what was happening as Kate was. He knew nothing about them, but it was anybody’s guess how Kate would react. She’d been remarkably philosophical about the situation so far, but this was different. He half-expected her to arrive at his door at any moment.

He contained himself until ten-past four, by which time he felt sure Helen must have told her. He hesitated and then dialled the number, no longer caring about what Helen might say. After a second’s delay the engaged tone sounded. He swore. No doubt she was talking to lover boy, telling him that it was out in the open and they could do what the hell they liked. He waited several minutes and tried again. It was still engaged.

The light was flashing on the answer phone and he remembered that there was a message from Hutch asking him to ring back. He hoped it wasn’t about bloody Sarah, because he was sick of hearing her name, but he dialled Hutch’s number anyway. It was something to do.

Hutch answered straight away.

‘Hello, Frank. I’m afraid it’s bad news. Eddie Young collapsed this morning. It happened soon after you left.’

It was the last thing Frank had expected. ‘What was it, a heart attack?’

‘A stroke, we think. One minute he was chatting and laughing with the rest of us, and the next he was face down on the bar. They’ve taken him to Cullington General.’
