Chapter Eleven

Sadly, the voice didn’t belong to who I thought – or hoped – it did. I gestured to the seat beside me thinking the guy was going to join me. He looked familiar, although I had a hard time placing him. Rather than sit, he lifted the chair to take it away.

Before he got too far, he set it back down and tilted his head to the side. “Wait a sec, aren’t you Table Twelve?”

I narrowed my eyes and tried to remember who he was. From the speed dating mixer, obviously, but his name escaped me.

Pointing to his chest, he said, “Number two? The Funcle?”

“Ah, yes.” It slowly came back, and a barrage of names formed. Hesitantly, I grabbed one. “Rian, right?”

A giant smile stretched from ear to ear. “Yeah, you remembered. Hey, how’s it going?”

“Fine.”

He quickly scanned my table. “Dining alone?”

“Actually, just finishing up.” I glanced around.

The patio was packed, and no doubt, my table was in high demand. The vacant chairs were going to be snatched away quickly.

“It seems my time is done here.”

“Aw, too bad.” He rested against the top of the chair, rocking back and forth on his feet. “Why don’t you come and join my party?” He thumbed to the table behind which was a mix of males and females.

It’s not like I had big plans waiting for me back at my apartment, so I lifted my shoulders in a weak shrug and agreed.

Two beers later, along with a couple of shot rounds, and I’d found a cool new group to hang out with. Turned out Rian was a pretty decent guy, as was his family. For the first time in a long time, I was laughing and having a blast with a group of strangers who adopted me into their pack. Sure, it was at a pub, maybe no different than going to the Cowboy Den, but with Rian and his family, it was a weird sensation of fitting in. I blended, made jokes, and had a genuinely good time.

Rian nuzzled his nose into my cheek as the group was breaking up and saying their goodbyes. “Come with me to my place.”

Feeling more than a little randy and on top of the world, I couldn’t resist.

We bid adieu to his family, and I stumbled through the doorway back into the pub, falling against his chest when I lost my balance.

Amber, the bartender, greeted me at the breezeway and gave me a solid assessment. “Everything okay here?”

Rian wrapped his arm tightly around my waist. “She’s mildly intoxicated, but I’m taking her home to bed.”

“Oh yes, yes, you are.” I gazed up into his face and grinded against his thigh.

“Dr. Tarkin, are you sure you’re okay?” The bartender’s voice grew louder, but she was closer too.

“Wait a sec.” Rian pushed me out of his embrace, and I nearly collapsed since I was no longer being supported. “You’re the town doctor?”

The bartender’s voice came out of left field. “You didn’t know who she was?”

My head volleyed between them as they spoke.
