My phone ringing woke me up. The curtains were blocking out any light, so I wasn’t sure of the time. Julissa was asleep in my arms. Having her here and knowing she didn’t feel the need to sneak away was everything I wanted. The ringing stopped and picked up again. I sighed and carefully slid my arm from under her head.

She grumbled something and rolled into a new position. After finding my phone on the ground, I picked it up to see my agent’s name and the time. 5:49 a.m.

I answered and pitched my voice as low as I could. “Somebody better be fucking dead, Geo.”

“Your career could be,” he said. “Did you not see the news last night?”

Geoffrey Westin was amazing. I’d known him since right after I got drafted. The only person outside of my family and Julissa who’d kick ass for me was this man. If he was calling, it was important and not arbitrary news. I shot up in the bed and immediately looked toward Julissa. She hadn’t woken up thankfully. I carefully got out of bed and left her room. My boxers were somewhere, but I didn’t have time to look for them.

“I was occupied”—Fucking my best friend in every room of her apartment, watching a movie and mimicking the sex scenes in vivid detail, and eating Chinese food to regain energy—“What happened?”

“Speculation on who they are after?” I was damn near on vocal autopilot. My mind was spiraling. If they traded Ashley and the others for a better pick, not only were we down defensive backs, it had to be for good reason. He was on injury reserve, so it wouldn’t make sense to get rid of him. None of this made any sense.

“The QB from Georgia Tech.”

“But I’m the cream of the crop. Are they looking to rebuild in the draft instead of keeping me as the starter? Is that why I keep getting shit offers from them? That would change everything. And I won’t be back up for some rookie after everything I’ve done for this team. What’s going on with the other offers?”

“Different people saying different shit,” Geo said. “Don’t worry about the Draft. We need to solidify your contract first. I’m sure that kid will get picked up by Miami. They need a QB and have the overall pick. As far as the other offers, I’m waiting to hear back from New England, Miami, and Detroit. Arizona and Las Vegas said they’ll have something for us tomorrow. Both seem like they’ll be better than what LA last offered.”

I dropped into a chair in the dining room. We’d effectively
