When George told me this story, he and I both realized that his mother had been totally released from what seemed in retrospect like a malignant curse. We also both recognized that he had violated the implicit and explicit code of ethics observed by all psychedelic explorers—not to give a psychedelic drug to someone without their knowledge and consent—and had taken a chance in so doing. But he also realized that there was no way that he could explain what the medicine was or predict what the effects would be. The deep soul connection and trust between mother and son, and their basic integrity, outweighed the more superficial, fearful, and paranoid ideation that afflicted the old lady.
