“Justin was stationed at Fort Bragg and he was on tour in Afghanistan in 2008,” Bruce tells me over the phone the following day. “The reason for his premature return back to the US was because he was shot in the left leg near the hip.”

This is not what I have been expecting to hear from my PI. I have become more and more convinced that Justin lied to me about all kinds of stuff. I expected to hear that he hadn’t been in the army at all, certainly not that he had been on tour in Afghanistan and gotten injured there.

“Are you sure?” I ask him, scowling at the phone.

“Yes. I can send you the records that confirm his attendance, even what hospital he was treated in when he returned home.”

“That would be great. Please send them to my email address if possible.” Not that I think Bruce is lying to me, but it never hurts to have every shred of information in writing.

“Will do. Expect them this evening.”

“Okay. What about what Bernie Rothman is doing with all the money he’s funneling away from the hedge fund?”

“I’m still working on that. As soon as I know more, I’ll get back to you.”

We disconnect and I recline on my couch, petting Rocky distractedly. So Justin didn’t lie about the army then, I muse. Maybe he’s not as full of shit as I have begun to think. Ever since Noel told me he and Scott have known each other since middle school, I have felt like I have no idea who it was I was dating. Which parts were real and which were not?

I scratch Rocky behind the ears, which he loves. So now that I have this information, what do I do with it? How does it change the situation? I can’t see that it does, unfortunately, because I still don’t know why Mom and Scott wanted to get rid of Justin. If only I could think of a few reasons… I exhale, frustrated. So far, not even one motive has occurred to me and I have thought about it plenty already. It’s got to have something to do with GF STRATEGY, even if Bruce hasn’t been able to find any connection between Justin and the hedge fund. According to the PI, Justin was definitely not one of the investors. I never expected him to be; between the two of us, he was the poor one, barely worth the salary he earned when he worked at the paper.

That is, as far as I know he was the poor one, I remind myself darkly.

Maybe he had a secret bank account in Switzerland and was using a fake name when investing with GF STRATEGY. Bruce hasn’t been able to find out much of interest on some of the investors. One of them could be Justin, couldn’t it?

I narrow my eyes and push out my lips as I ponder this possibility. I like the idea of Justin being involved in the hedge fund under a fake name.
