CHAPTER 16

IGOR

I retreated to my room in a hurry and glanced at the clock. It wasn’t ten yet, so that meant it was before Ryder’s bedtime.

How had I missed it? How had I missed something so major?

My finger found Ryder’s contact on autopilot, and he answered without my noticing the phone ringing. “Hello?”

The thoughts whirring through my head were too fast to keep up with and my mouth started talking before I knew what was going to come out of it. “Have you always been Malcolm’s submissive?”

Ryder didn’t so much speak as he squeaked, the startled “What?” cracking over the phone like painful feedback.

There was no time to check on him, my brain moving too fast to stop. I needed answers and I couldn’t call Seth or Trevor. I liked them both and we’d been friends for years, but we weren’t close and I was pretty sure neither of them had any clue that I had feelings for Yuri. Ryder was my only confidant as well as my only hope of figuring my shit out.

“You have a unique relationship with Malcolm. He tells you to go to bed—I checked the time before I called. Bedtime is at ten. He calls you baby. He threatens you with punishments and bribes you with rewards. You are submissive, no?”

“I-I—What was the question?”

Maybe I had been too blunt. Was there any way to soften my delivery after the fact?

Before I could figure out what to say, Ryder gathered his thoughts. “What happens between Malcolm and me is private. I don’t know what you think you’ve figured out, but it really isn’t your place to judge,” he said, each word terse and clipped. Only then did I figure out that he thought I was disgusted or bothered by his relationship.

“Don’t hang up!” I held my hands in front of me like he could see me idiotically trying to show him I hadn’t meant any harm. “I am sorry. My brain hurts. Yuri said something tonight and I… I need someone to talk to who will understand.”

“Huh?” I was starting to worry about all the emotions I was causing Ryder.

“I like driving Yuri crazy. But I like when I make him happy too.” I collapsed on my bed. “I have never felt like this before.”

Ryder’s warm laughter was a balm to my soul, as was the way his voice had lost the hard edge when he spoke. “Sexual and kinky crisis. You don’t do anything by halves, Ozols.”

That statement successfully broke the tension between us and I was now chuckling. “Go big or go home.”

“Okay, okay, okay. Let’s break this down. What happened tonight? Because we left this afternoon with him telling you it wasn’t as easy as having feelings for one another. Now you’re telling me that he said something. From the way this conversation started, I think whatever he said made your brain go boom and your dick go hard.”

Laughter burst from me at the accuracy of his statement. “I would not have put it that way, but pretty much, yes.
