Chapter 19

The next morning, Laurel awoke at her normal time. She performed her wifely and motherly duties, just as she did every school morning. Assembled the lunches, doled out breakfast to everyone, fed the pets, wave goodbye... no one seemed to notice she did so in a robotic fashion. When they were all finally gone from the house, she dropped into a chair at the breakfast table with a cup of coffee.

Another day and another mismatched piece to try to fit into the puzzle she was valiantly trying to solve. Common sense dictated that John Wilkins be added to her personal list of suspects in Dr. Butler’s murder. She mentally reviewed her conversation with him last night at the administration building and honestly didn’t remember her questions being accusatory. The custodian had obviously taken her curiosity as a cross examination regarding his innocence.

Looking down into her now cold cup of dark coffee, Laurel sighed. What would an honest to goodness private investigator do now? Keep plodding away with questions, she supposed. The online PI course she had taken had covered only the rudiments of investigation and the course was made fun by including several different scenarios in which the student was the private investigator. She had answered multiple-choice questions about each situation, based on the clues. The results of these games were evaluated, and Laurel had scored well each time. Still, it wasn’t real life.

If only she could talk to a real private investigator. She could recount the case, go over what she had done so far, and get invaluable feedback. She could ask questions, get advice and be more confident of her next investigative move. Well, of course. With a mental forehead slap, Laurel got up and opened the drawer at the kitchen desk that contained the current Yellow Pages. She was so excited about her idea that she nearly dropped the bulky book.

She thumbed through the alphabetized pages until she reached the correct section. Her fingers walked down the page hurriedly. She saw listings for parties, pest control, and physicians. When did so many physicians start taking out half page advertisements? Becoming momentarily distracted in the plastic surgery section, she pressed on. Age was making eyelifts and tummy tucks look more appealing every day. She finally got to “Private Investigators - see Investigators”. Flipping to the section she needed, she waded through the many pages of Insurance and finally located Investigators.

There were maybe seventy-five listings with a handful of special advertisements. Many got creative in their chief area of investigation. She read one ad that advertised expertise in discovering cheating: unfaithful spouses, marital misconduct, and “check-a-mate.” Moving her finger down the listings, she came to an ad that declared this investigator was a former special government agent. Even better, his office was on the north side of San Antonio. She quickly jotted down his name, address, and telephone number. Glancing at her watch, she saw she had time for a quick run around her neighborhood before his office would be open.
