Arthur hadn’t even poured his coffee when he got the call from his mother. “Why didn’t you tell me Dale was coming back last night? I would have had his duplex ready.”

Arthur blinked and rubbed his face, switching the phone to his other ear so he could better wrangle the carafe. “What are you talking about?”

“Patty called me and said Susan saw him pull up to Marcus and Frankie’s place late last night. You told me he was staying in the Cities and coming this afternoon.”

That’s exactly what Dale had told him he was doing. Arthur put his coffee cup down and frowned at the wall. “Something must have come up.” Except he couldn’t fucking figure out what the hell would have. More to the point, he had no idea why Dale had gone to Marcus’s place instead of coming to the cabin.

He let his mother carry on a bit so she didn’t get suspicious of anything, then extricated himself and went upstairs to wake Gabriel. “Hey, baby, did Dale tell you he was coming to town last night?”

Gabriel lifted his head sleepily. “No, he’s not coming back until around three, he said.”

“You mind checking your phone quick to see if he sent you any texts?”

Groaning, Gabriel picked up his phone. “No. He said he probably wouldn’t be in contact much because he was so focused on getting packed up and out of there. Though it’s weird he didn’t text last night. But he said he knew it was your evening, and he didn’t want to interrupt.”

“Apparently part of the reason he was quiet was because he was driving here. He’s at Marcus and Frankie’s, according to my mother.”

Gabriel sat up on his arms, blinking at Arthur, still half asleep. “What?”

Arthur ruffled his hair. “You know what? This is your day off. You sleep in, and I’ll go see what’s going on.”

“Okay.” Gabriel pulled the comforter over his head.

Arthur put his coffee in a travel mug and swung through the cafe for some donuts to go, then tucked the box under his arm as he went up Frankie and Marcus’s walk. He almost knocked on the door, then thought better of it and doubled back around to the garage, where he saw both their cars were gone but Dale’s was still out front. He let himself in through the side door, noted the house was silent, that Dale’s boots were by the front door, then settled in at Frankie’s kitchen table to eat a donut and drink his coffee. He didn’t know what was going on, but he had a funny feeling something was off, and he knew he’d deal with the situation more smoothly with food in his stomach and caffeine in his blood.

Once he was done eating, he put his plate in the dishwasher so Marcus wouldn’t bitch, then went upstairs to see if he could find Dale.

Dale was asleep in one of the spare rooms, and when Arthur knocked on the door, he startled awake. He turned over and regarded Arthur blearily.
