Stephen could hardly wait to tell Cassandra the news, leaving work a little early. On the way, he picked up a dozen roses from the store and a bottle of Merlot, her favorite wine and drove to her house. He had called beforehand to tell her he was on his way, and she was looking forward to seeing him, especially after their disagreement a few nights ago.
Cassandra was looking out the window when he arrived and saw him holding the beautiful bouquet and bottle of wine. She opened the door and came running toward him, throwing her arms around his neck as he picked her up and turned her around before handing her the flowers.
âI missed you so much; Stephen and I never want to leave our conversations with each other being angry. I am so sorry.â
âOh, Cassie, it was not all your fault, and I am sorry as well. I bought these for you because I love you, but I actually have some great news I wanted to share with you as well.â Cassie looked on with excitement.
âWell, tell meâ¦â âYou know I am bad with surprises,â taking his hand and leading him into the house.
âThis morning, the director, Andrew, asked me to speak with him in the conference room.â
âI bet that made you a little tense,â said Cassandra, concerned as they both sat down on the couch.
âIt was a little daunting being I gave up my career for this job,â using his eyes to react to her comment.
âActually, Cass, itâs good news, wonderful news, placing his hand on her knee.â
âHe told me Paul is going to retire early, and they are ready for me to take over the permanent position and become partner, company car and all the perks that go with it.â
âOh, Stephen, that is amazing news. I am so proud of you,â leaning over to give a big hug. âWhat happened to Paul retiring in a year so you can get comfortable and learn more in-depth about the company?â
âHe is leaving early because they are making improvements by switching over the database and software, and Paul didnât want to have to relearn everything since he was planning on leaving, anyway.â
âWell, this is fantastic news. We need to celebrate. How about dinner out tonight?â
âThat sounds wonderful, Cassie, and it will give us a chance to talk about your appointment last Friday as well. How did it go?â
âHonestly, I really liked her, but we can talk more later. Let me get my coat and put these lovely flowers in a vase and go eat. Iâm starving.â
âWhat do you say we walk today? It is only a couple of blocks, and it is a beautiful evening with the freshly fallen snow.â
âLove that idea, Stephen. I will get my gloves and scarf.â âI will grab mine out of the car on our way.â
The weather was ideal for walking. The moon was full and extra bright this evening, lighting up the streets as the black ice sparkled in the moonlight. There
